HAGERSTOWN, Md.—The Harford softball team split a doubleheader against Hagerstown, falling 11-8 in game one and earning a 3-1 win in game two on Saturday at Hagerstown. The Fighting Owls (3-1, 1-1 MDJUCO) gave up eight runs in the first inning, but tied things up in the top of the sixth, before Hagerstown added three more scores in the bottom of the inning.
Sophomore Sarah Morrill (Smyrna, Tenn./C. Milton Wright) led Harford, going 5-for-9 on the day with a double a home run, three RBI and two runs scored, while freshman Mariah Ripken (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace/Kutztown) (1-0) earned the game two win, allowing just one run on five hits and fanning five batters in seven innings. Sophomore Sarah Cooley (Clermont, Fla./Bel Air) (1-1) was tabbed with the loss after allowing 11 runs (three earned) on 11 hits and striking out seven batters in six innings.
Harford struggled during the first inning of game one, giving up eight runs in a frame that saw four Owl errors and five Hawk (2-2, 2-2 MDJUCO) hits, but battled back adding two runs in the top of the third off Morrill's homer and one in the fourth on freshman Amber Thompson's (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) RBI single.
Five more runs as Harford batted around the order in the sixth would knot things up at eight runs each, but three Hagerstown hits and a Harford error would give the Hawks three more in the bottom of the sixth on the way to the 11-8 win.
Game two saw Harford get on the board in the second thanks to sophomore Audrey Werneke's (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) RBI single and two more runs in the third off freshman Cierra Stinson's (Nottingham, Md./Mercy) two-run homer would be all the Owls needed on the way to the 3-1 win.
The Fighting Owls return to action on Wednesday when they host Cecil for a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. Monday's games against Delaware Tech-Stanton has been postponed due to rain and will be made up on April 5.
