BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford softball team snapped a four-game losing streak as it swept a doubleheader from Delaware Tech-Stanton, 7-2 and 17-8 (6 inn.) on Monday at Harford Softball Field.
Sophomore Sarah Morrill (Smyrna, Tenn./C. Milton Wright) led the Fighting Owls (6-8) on the day, going 4-for-6 with five runs, a double, a triple, four RBI and three walks, while sophomore Sarah Cooley (Clermont, Fla./Bel Air) was 5-for-9 with four runs, a double and six RBI. Cooley (3-4) also picked up the game one win, allowing just two runs on five hits while fanning seven batters in seven innings and freshman Mariah Ripken (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace/Kutztown) (2-1) took the second win, giving up eight runs (three earned) on eight hits and striking out seven batters in six innings.
Kelli Thomson led the Spirit (2-11), going 4-for-7 with two runs, two doubles and three RBI on the day, while Sandra McNally suffered both losses, giving up a combined 24 runs (16 earned) on 27 hits and striking out just one batter in 11 innings of work.
Harford jumped onto the board in the first of game one thanks to a two-run RBI single by freshman Amber Thompson (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) and added two more in the second off Morrill's RBI double and Cooley's RBI single to take a 4-0 lead.
Del Tech cut the lead in half with a two-run RBI single from Meghan Park in the fourth, but a two-run RBI single by Morrill and RBI single from Cooley gave the Owls three more in the sixth on the way to the 7-3 game one win.
Game two saw the Spirit capitalize on a Harford passed ball and two errors, scoring four unearned runs before the Owls got out of the first inning.
A three-run first for Harford, that saw Morrill score on a wild pitch and Cooley and freshman Natalie Baker (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) notch RBI singles, cut the lead to one, but Del Tech would add some insurance with two runs in the second, off Thomson's two-run RBI double, to take a 6-3 lead.
The advantage was rendered null in the bottom of the third as Harford batted around the order, scoring nine runs on eight hits and a Del Tech error to take an insurmountable, 12-6 lead. The Spirit slimmed the advantage to four, with two runs in the fourth, but after two Harford loaded the bases to start the sixth, Ripken put the Owls one run away from the eight-run mercy rule, 15-8, with a two-run RBI double.
Thompson followed with a two-run RBI single to give the Owls the 17-8, six-inning win.
The Fighting Owls return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Montgomery College-Rockville for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
