MAYS LANDING, N.J. - Three was the magic number on Saturday for the Harford women's basketall team. The Fighting Owls won their third game by scoring in triple digits for the third-straight time.
Ashley Sammons' 3-0 squad was propelled by three triple-doubles in the win, a program record. Harford defeated Atlantic Cape, 113-35.
The Fighting Owls had scored in triple figures once in the first two Sammons' campaigns. Saturday's 113 points is a record under Sammons, after this year's team totaled 100 and 105 in their first two games. Against the Buccaneers, the Fighting Owl defense was also in high gear, collecting a season-best 41 steals en route to holding ACCC to 35 points, the best showing for the Harford defense all season.
Prior to Saturday, the Fighting Owls had only recorded three triple-doubles in program history, two of them by players who added to that total against Atlantic Cape.
Shelby Key recorded her second career triple-double with a game-high 27 points, 13 assists and 11 steals.
Tiffany Taylor also tallied her second career triple-double with 24 points, 11 rebounds and 10 steals. She added seven assists, as well. Key's first career triple-double came in 2011, while Taylor's was in 2010.
Freshman
Capree Garner got in the triple-double action, as well, recording 23 points, 11 steals and 10 assists in the win.
The other triple-double in program history came in 2008, when Sarah Spalt had 28 points, 12 boards and 11 helpers against Philadelphia.
The Fighting Owls next return to home to help open the brand new APG Federal Credit Union on Thursday at 5 p.m. against Delaware County. Tickets are
