BEL AIR, Md. - After jumping out to a large lead, allowing its rivals back into the game, reclaiming the lead and then blowing a save in the ninth inning, the Harford baseball team scored two unearned runs for a walkoff win against Anne Arundel on Tuesday, 16-15. The win exacted some measure of revenge against the Pioneers, who ended the Fighting Owls' season last year.
Freshman
Norm Donkin had more highs than lows in the victory, but did achieve both on Tuesday. As an outfielder, Donkn went 4-for-4, including the game-winning bunt single in the bottom of the ninth inning. He came in to close out a 14-11 win on the mound in the top of the inning, but forfeited the lead on a two-out, three-run triple, setting up the dramatic finish.
Freshman pinch-hitter
Jerry Jerminski started the rally with a single up the middle. Sophomore
Cory Shaver then got down a perfect sacrifice bunt and pinch runner
Ronnie Zeberlein beat the attempt at second base to set up the game's final play.
Donkin also set down a sacrifice bunt attempt and beat the throw from the third baseman, which went up the line and into right field, allowing both runners to score in a walkoff thriller.
Donkin earned his first collegiate win on mound and went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs (an RBI single in the 3rd and a sacrifice fly in the 7th).
Both teams collected 16 hits, but Anne Arundel (10-5, 2-1 MD JUCO) committed six errors, including the final play, compared to Harford's (12-4, 3-0 MD JUCO) lone miscue.
Harford jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two and 9-2 advantage after the third inning. Anne Arundel then sent down the Fighting Owls in order during the fourth and fifth innings, but the home team scored in every other inning, adding two in the sixth and seventh, one in the eighth before the thrilling two run bottom of the ninth.
Taylor Nelson started the game for Harford and pitched 5.2 innings. He had trouble with his control for the first time this year, walking three and hitting five. He was hit up for eight runs on just six hits and couldn't escape a jam in the Pioneers' seven-run sixth inning. He allowed just two hits in the frame, but couldn't record the final out before Anne Arundel knotted the score at 9-9.
Anthony Ortiz went 3-for-5 with a team-best three RBIs, while Shaver finished with two hits and four runs scored.
James Wilson and
Justin Malehorn also recorded two hits in the win.
The Fighting Owls travel to Salem for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference tilt on Wednesday.
