Three Unearned Runs Haunt Baseball in 4-3 Loss

Box Score
BEL AIR, Md. - For the first time in 363 days the Harford baseball team was defeated at home, dropping a 4-3 decision to Monroe on Friday. The Fighting Owls won 27 home games in a row before losing on an unearned run in the ninth inning.

The Mustangs score three unearned runs in the victory, a pair in the fifth and the game winner in the ninth. In a tie game, Monroe got the leadoff man aboard with their sixth hit of the night. That chased starter Nick Stallings (4-1) who went eight-plus while striking out a career-best 12 batters.

Matt Petrizzi's first batter dropped down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown into rightfield, allowing the winning run to score and the bunter to reach third base. Petrizzi escaped the jam, but Harford could not tie the game in the ninth, despite Jon McAllister's two-out single and his fifth stole base of the night.

McAllister, Anthony Ortiz and James Wilson each recorded two-hit games in the loss. The Fighting Owls stranded eight men while hitting into a pair of double plays.

Stallings took the first loss of his career while scattering six hits, striking out 12 without a walk.

The last Harford home loss was on April 2, also a 4-3 defeat, to Germantown. Last year Harford went 30-2 at home.

The Fighting Owls host Rockville on Saturday at noon.
