BEL AIR, Md. - The Harford softball team (0-9, 0-2) dropped both games of its home and conference openers on Sunday to Chesapeake (2-0, 2-0). After falling 15-4 in the opener, the Fighting Owls let one slip away, 9-5, in the nightcap.
Freshman centerfielder
Brittany Kinnear was the lone bright spot in the opener, going 3-for-4. The Fighting Owls took a 3-2 lead in the first inning after four hits and a walk before the Skipjacks even recorded an out. Chesapeake then struck out the next three batters and took control of the game.
Kebrina Johnson,
Megan Appold and
Hanna Ayestas each recorded RBIs in the first inning, with Johnson's base knock being a double to left center.
In game two, the Fighting Owls took a 5-0 lead behind the great pitching of
Deanna Butler. Butler held the Skipjacks hitless for the first four innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth. Chesapeake scored one run in the fourth without a hit, then added three runs on four hits in the fifth and sixth innings.
Kinnear went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI triple.
Ashley Crowe also went 2-for-4, while Ayestas and
Brooke Olszewski each added RBI singles.
The Fighting Owls are back in action on Thursday against Brookdale at 3 p.m.
