MEDIA, Pa. - Freshman righthander
Taylor Nace tossed a no-hitter to earn his first collegiate victory with a 12-0 win over Delaware County on Wednesday. Nace struck out a career-high 11 batters while tossing 100 pitches in the seven-inning win.
Nace, making his second career start after starring at Susquenita High School, allowed just one runner to reach second base, walking six batters in the win. The Harford outfield had a boring day, since no Phantom player sent a batted ball past the infield dirt in the entire game.
The Fighting Owl offense ended the game early after a pair of six-run innings forced the 10-run rule.
Anthony Ortiz went 3-for-3 with three singles, and
Kyle Lindsey and
Jon McAllister both went 2-for-3 with a single and a double.
Dennis Mitchell connected on a three-run home run in the fourth inning into the trees in right field.
Justin Malehorn went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. In all, the Fighting Owls collected 14 hits, marking the third time in four games Harford has totaled double-digits hits. The team had a season-high 16 hits in a win over Delaware Tech.
But the story of the day was Nace's dominance on the rubber. His no-no was the third in the past two seasons for Harford baseball. Last season, freshman
Jamie Paschuck ('11) tossed two no-hitters in a two-week span before transferring to the University of Maryland for his sophomore season. The 11 strikeouts are the most since
Jason Seitler struck out 10 Hawks in a 4-1 win over Hagerstown on April 30, 2011.
Overall for the season, Nace (1-0) has three appearances, two starts and 10.2 innings of work. He has struck out 12 with a 3.38 earned-run average.
The Fighting Owls host a pair of doubleheaders against Garrett (Sat. at noon) and Jamestown (Sun. at noon) before welcoming rival Anne Arundel to the Harford Sports Complex on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
