Baseball Sweeps Defending Champ Frederick

BEL AIR, Md. - The Fighting Owl baseball team enjoyed a Good Friday with a conference sweep of MD JUCO defending champion Frederick at home. Harford improved to 28-7 overall and increased its conference lead with a 13-1 MD JUCO mark with 12-2 and 6-0 victories.

The Fighting Owls allowed a pair of runs in the top of the first inning of the opener, then scored 18 unanswered runs to sweep the Cougars for the first time under head coach Tom Eller. Taylor Nelson (2-2) and Jason Seitler (6-1) dominated last year's conference champs on the mound, allowing just nine hits combined in the doubleheader sweep.

Nelson allowed two runs on four hits in the first inning, then settled down to scatter two hits in the final five innings to earn the victory on the bump for Harford. He struck out three and walked three in his second win of the season.

Offensivley, the Fighting Owls took the lead for good with four runs in the second inning and ended it early with a five-run sixth inning, totaling 12 runs on 10 hits.

Norm Donkin continued to swing a hot bat, taking the team lead in RBIs with a five-RBI opener. The rightfielder went 3-for-3 with a two-run single that put Harford on the board in the second and a two-run double that put the game on the verge in the sixth.

Jon McAllister had a pair of three-hit games on the day, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored in the opener. Jerry Jerminski went 1-for-1, but scored four times in the win.

Seitler was dominant from the jump, scatering three hits in the complete game victory. It was his first career complete game shutout, and the righthander allowed just three runners to reach second base in his team-best sixth win of the year. The sophomore struck out six while walking just one.

McAllister added three hits, including a leadoff triple, while Anthony Ortiz and James Wilson both had two hits. Wilson and Dennis Mitchell chipped in with a pair of RBIs.

The Fighting Owls host CCBC Essex on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
