BEL AIR, Md. - The No. 25 Harford women's basketball team (16-1) overcame a poor shooting night that had a sloppy undertone to defeat Salem (5-10) at home on Monday, 66-55. The contest was never in doubt after a Fighting Owls 20-5 run to start to the second half.
The Fighting Owls were again led by the top scoring duo in the nation,
Capree Garner and
Tiffany Taylor. Garner, who leads the nation with a 23.1 points per game average, finished with 22 points, while Taylor, who ranks fifth in the nation with 20.7 ppg, led all scorers with 25 points.
Taylor also led the Fighting Owls with eight rebounds while chipping in four steals. Garner had six steals, a team-high, but also had eight turnovers.
Harford had 21 turnovers in the contest, but did force 29 miscues from Salem.
Shelby Key added nine points, seven rebounds and seven turnovers.
The open of the second stanza saw the Fighting Owl full-court pressure force numerous turnovers that led to fast-break buckets, helping Harford pull away. A late rally by the Oaks was too little, too late.
The Fighting Owls host Globe Tech at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
