Three-Run Eighth Propels Harford to 13th Straight

Sean Downing
Box Score NORTH EAST, Md. – The Fighting Owls responded to a five-run seventh by Cecil with a three-run eighth to win their 13th straight game, 12-9.

In a battle of preseason MD JUCO favorites, the Fighting Owls (18-3, 7-0 MD JUCO) got contributions from up and down the lineup in what was their biggest win of the season thus far. The offense continues to come up big, scoring 12 runs on 10 hits. The Seahawks (12-11, 2-3 MD JUCO) lived up their billing as a favorite in the conference, scoring nine runs on 13 hits including three home runs.

Freshman Jordan Glover slammed the game-winning RBI double in the top of the eighth after Cecil scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game on two long balls. Sophomore Sean Downing made an outstanding play to end the rally, reaching over the fence to rob a would-be go-ahead homer.

Sophomore Norm Donkin reached base three times including an RBI double in the eighth to give Harford a three-run lead. Donkin went 1-3 with two walks and an RBI. He also pitched the ninth to record his third save of the season.

After going down 3-1 in the third inning, the Fighting Owls put an eight-spot on the board in the top of the fifth on six hits, all with two outs. Sophomore Jerry Jerminski worked a bases loaded walk to jump start the scoring. Freshmen Nick Freeberger and Jose Martinez followed up with a single and a double respectively, plating two RBI each. Downing blooped a single over the second baseman's head to score Martinez from second. Sophomore Jon McAllister capped off the rally with a double to centerfield scoring Downing and freshman Justin Gartner to make it 9-3.

Cecil responded immediately with a solo homer by freshman Matt Murray on sophomore Matt Petrizzi's first pitch to lead off the bottom half of the fifth.

Petrizzi went six strong, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits. He kept hitters off balance with a sharp curveball, striking out six batters with just one free pass.

Cecil rallied in the bottom of the seventh with five runs to knot the game on the strength of two-run shots by freshmen Izzack Albright and Chris Doherty. Sophomore Matt Cleary started the rally with a lead-off double, later scoring on a wayward pick-off attempt at third base.

Freshman Rob Koski pitched around a walk, sandwiched between two singles to load the bases in the eighth, allowing no runs to hold the lead.

Freshman Matt Barbour worked two thirds of an inning in the seventh and was credited with the first win of his career.

Martinez finished with a team-high three RBI while Freeberger, Glover and McAllister each finished with two RBI.

Harford freshman Shane Garrett extended his hit streak to 20 games with a single in the fifth. He went 1-5 with a walk and two runs. Garrett has a hit in every game he's played in this season.

Harford is back in action on Saturday when they host Lehigh Carbon for a two-game set at Harford Sports Complex. First pitch is at 11 AM.
