BEL AIR, Md. - The Harford softball team (2-3) collected its first doubleheader sweep of the season against Erie (0-2) on Friday. The Fighting Owls won game one by the mercy rule, 13-5, before needing a come-from-behind effort to win game two, 6-3.
Harford 13, Erie 5
The Fighting Owls scored four runs in the opening frame without a hit or an error, and cruised to the 13-5 victory. Harford was the benificiary of seven first-inning walks.
Jess Sanders provided a pair of big hits in the win. The sophomore first baseman had a two-run double in the fourth and a two-run single in the fifth.
Madeleine Favazza and
Abby Young were the table setters for the Fighting Owl offense, as the No. 1 and 2 batters both went 3-for-4.
Brittany Stein (1-2) went the distance to earn her first win of the season.
Harford 6, Erie 3
Tajae Harris went 2-for-3 at the top of the order in the nightcap to pace the Fighting Owl offensive attack, and pitcher Rebecca Steele (1-1) was sensational to earn her first win of the young season.
Steele was perfect the first time through the batting order, but the Kats took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Harford then scored five runs in the final two innings before the game was called due to darkness.
All three of Steele's runs allowed were unearned.
The Fighting Owls open the conference portion of the season on Saturday at noon against Garrett.
