Baseball Falls 2-1 Against No. 2 Gloucester

Box Score
BEL AIR, Md. - The Harford baseball team (24-7) dropped a 2-1 non-conference tilt against second-ranked Gloucester (22-2) at home on Wednesday. In a game that saw solid pitching, great defense and timely hitting on both sides, it was the Roadrunners who came out on top.

Matt Ackerman collected a two-out RBI single off of reliever Matt Petrizzi (2-1) in the seventh inning, a run that proved to be the game winner. George Monsen scored both runs for Gloucester, also coming across in the fifth inning with two outs.

Petrizzi and fellow captain Jon McAllister both collected three hits in the loss. Petrizzi's first hit was an RBI triple that scored Sean Downing in the second inning.

McAllister made a run-saving, diving catch to end the fourth inning. Later in the game, Ackerman, the Roadrunners centerfielder, returned the favor to save two runs, diving to rob Jordan Glover of extra bases to end the sixth.

Kyle Hurley and Nick Stallings each tossed three innings in the loss. Hurley scattered two hits to open the game and Stallings allowed one run on five hits.

In the loss, Shane Garrett's school-record 28-game hitting streak came to an end, marking the first time in his collegiate career that he didn't collect a hit. He fouled off three 3-2 pitches with two outs in the bottom of the ninth with the tying run at second base before the Gloucester second baseman made a dazzling, game-saving stop and throw from his backside. The throw just barely beat the nation's leading hittier and saved a run, as McAllister was hustling around third and would have easily scored on the play to tie it up.

Gloucester's Mike Sullivan picked up the win and Kevin Walsh pitched a one-hit ninth for the save.

Harford hosts Anne Arundel on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Harford Sports Complex.
