BEL AIR, Md. - The Harford basketball teams open MD JUCO action with a doubleheader against rival Baltimore City on Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. All fans who attend the contest will receive a Fighting Owl Stress Toy just in time for finals, sponsored by the HCC College Store.
The women's team (5-2, 0-0 MD JUCO) take on the first-place Panthers (5-1, 3-0 MD JUCO) in a rematch of both of last year's playoff title games. BCCC bested head coach
Ashley Sammons' squad in the MD JUCO Championship Game, but the Fighting Owls bounced back to end Baltimore City's season in the Region XX Championship Game.Â
This year's Fighting Owls are a more balanced team, as five student-athletes average double figures in scoring. Sophomore
Ashley Smith leads the way with 19.4 ppg, a total that ranks fifth in the conference charts and her 7.0 apg is tops among conference players. BCCC has already won three conference contests, and Michelle Wright leads the Panthers in scoring with 19.5 ppg through six contests.
On the men's side, Harford (5-3, 0-0 MD JUCO) has already won as many games as last year's team and looks to make its mark in the conference opener under new head coach
Mike Smelkinson. The Fighting Owls have five players average at least 7.0 ppg, led by freshman
Jon Warren's 13.0 ppg and sophomore
Malachi Seney's 12.3 ppg. Baltimore City (4-4, 2-1 MD JUCO) is led by Terry Harris' 20.1 ppg and 10.7 rpg.
