Walk-Off Win Earns Split With Tough Monroe Squad

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
BEL AIR, Md. - Freshman Joe Sheeran capped off a miraculous comeback with a two-out base hit in the four-run seventh in Harford baseball's 5-4 walk-off win on Friday. The Fighting Owls earned a split against Monroe after dropping the opener 12-1.

The comeback victory erased all of the bad taste of the opener, where the Mustangs jumped all over Harford, scoring in every inning off a shortened-game. The Fighting Owls bats were also quiet, until the final inning of the day.

Monroe led 4-1 heading into the seventh of the nightcap, holding Harford to just three hits in six innings. The Mustangs went to the bullpen, where things quickly went awry.

Justin Malehorn led off the frame reaching base via the hit-by-pitch. Tyler Napierala walked, forcing a pitching change, but things didn't get much better. The new hurler walked CJ Young to load the bases and Cody Brittain to force in a run and put the game-winning run aboard without a hit.

Another pitching change resulted in a shallow fly ball to left that advanced no one, but Rob Koski followed with a deep fly to center for a sac fly, plating a run while Young advanced to third base on heads-up base running as the game's tying run. Brittain then stole second to get into scoring position.

Finally, the Fighting Owls produced their first hits of the inning, a two-out chopper by Daulton Weeks to third base that couldn't be handled scoring Young and a laser up the middle past a diving shortstop by Sheeran for the game-winner.

Atticks (3-1) went the distance and earned the win after settling down after a rough start. After Monroe scored in all five innings in game one, they jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a pair in the first and one in the second and third. He struck out six without walking a batter. Atticks also held the potent Mustang offense to just one hit after the third inning.

The Fighting Owls host Frederick for a pair on Saturday at noon.
