Weeks Blasts Baseball Past Catonsville In Extras

Daulton Weeks
Box Score
CATONSVILLE, Md. -- Daulton Weeks smashed a go-ahead home run in extra  innings to propel Harford to a 12-11 win in a topsy-turvy MD JUCO battle with CCBC Catonsville.

Harford (20-18-1, 13-6 MD JUCO) saw a three-run lead disappear in the last of the ninth, but were able to overcome the let down on the strength of Weeks' solo blast in the 11th inning. The no doubt shot to left field was Weeks' third of the season.

Catonsville (17-16, 7-7 MD JUCO) erased a three-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth on the strength of two singles, two walks, an error and a sacrifice fly.

Right-handed pitcher James English and left-hander Dalton Reed were only able to record an out apiece as Catonsville worked them into deep counts and have some good swings with the game on the line. English gave up a lead-off walk and two singles while Reed gave up a walk to load the bases and a sacrifice fly which pushed across the tying run. CJ Young committed a throwing error behind English who was charged with all three of the runs in the inning, two of them being earned.

Right-hander Ben Collincini was able to put out the fire, replacing Reed with two outs and runners on first and third and inducing a groundout to second base to send the game to extra-innings tied at eleven. Collincini worked the 10th and 11th innings, setting the Cardinals down in order in the 10th and giving up just a single in the 11th. He struck out three batters in all while allowing just one base runner.

The Fighting Owls were threat on offense all throughout the game. They loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning but were unable to break it open early. They plated just one run on Brandon Smith's sacrifice fly, scoring Craig Joseph from third. It was a missed opportunity, but served as a precursor to an avalanche of runs.

Catonsville answered right back, sending 10 men to the plate in the bottom half of the second. They scored six runs off of starting pitcher Anthony Atticks, five of which were earned. Atticks nearly escaped the inning without giving up a run. He retired the first batter of the inning but then gave up two singles and a walk to load the bases. He induced what looked to be an inning-ending double play but second baseman Joe Sheeran's throw pulled first baseman Justin Malehorn of the bag on the pivot allowing the run to score from third and for the inning to continue. Catonsville capitalized on the miscue with base hits in their next three at-bats. Sheeran was unable to stop the bleeding when a routine groundball, which would have been the third out, hopped off his glove for an E4 and the sixth run of the inning.

Harford showed great resiliency though, scoring three runs in the third inning to put the game back within striking distance. Atticks did his part on the mound, bouncing back with three scoreless innings and allowing the Fighting Owls to go to work with the bats.

In the fourth inning, Tyler Napierala connected on his fourth home run of the season. Malehorn singled to lead off the inning and Napierala jumped all over a 1-0 pitch, blasting a 2-run homer over the fence in left field to tie the game at six.

After Atticks retired the Cardinals in order in the bottom of the fourth, Harford put up a four-spot in the fifth to take what looked to be a commanding lead. Jake Molison, who entered the game in the fourth inning for Sheeran, doubled to lead off the inning. Weeks reached first on an attempted sacrifice bunt. Cardinals second baseman Derek Sicca, covering first base, was charged with an error for coming off the base before receiving the throw from pitcher Shane Sweeney. Sicca made another defensive gaffe on the ensuing play when Malehorn popped out in foul territory. Sicca caught the ball in foul territory behind first base with his momentum carrying him away from home plate instead of giving way to right fielder Leandro Guzman who was in better position to make a strong throw home. Molison was able to tag up from third and score easily on the play. Napierala, Rob Koski, and Cody Brittain each had RBI singles in the inning.

Napierala was able to manufacture another run in the seventh almost single-handedly. He reached first on an error. The ball was laced but right at Cardinals third baseman Matt Bougard who did well to knock the ball down. But despite having plenty of time to make a good throw, he fired wayward, pulling first baseman Trejon Smith off the base. Napierala was then able to score from first base without the ball being put into play. He stole second base on the very next pitch and the throw by catcher Will Enrico skipped in front of second and deflected off the back of Sicca into left field. Napierala advanced to third and continued around to the plate with the ball sitting in no-man's land in the outfield. The alert play pushed Harford's lead to 11-7 at the time.

Napierala had another productive day, going 3-for-6 with three runs scored and three runs driven in. The lead-off man has been consistent all season, getting on base at a 0.459 clip while slugging a team leading four home runs.

Nine out of ten of the Harford hitters who got at-bats got hits in the game. Young went 3-for-6 from the plate, scored two runs and stole a base. Koski and Weeks each had two hits. Koski scored a run and drove in a run while Weeks scored two and drove in two. Brittain and Joseph each had a hit, a walk and a run driven in. Joseph scored two runs as well.

On the mound, Collincini was the winning pitcher. He pitched 2 1/3 innings, striking out three while giving up one hit. Atticks battled after giving up the crooked number in the second inning, going 5 1/3 innings. He gave up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and three walks with two punch outs. Carlos-Henri Ferre gave up a hit in 2/3 of an inning. John Hetterman gave up a run on two hits, with one hit being a home run by Bougard, and a walk. English gave up three runs (two earned) in 1 1/3 inning on two hits and a walk with two strike outs. Reed pitched 1/3 of an inning and gave up a walk.
Harford travels to Cumberland to face Allegany for a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
