Box Score LARGO, Md. -- Harford Baseball were stymied at the plate slipping back below the .500 mark as they fell to Prince George's, 6-5.
Harford (20-21-1, 13-9 MD JUCO) closed to within a run and had the tying run on base in the ninth inning but were unable to complete what would have been a five-run comeback.
Cody Brittain singled to represent the tying run and
Craig Joseph made a strong bid to bring him home but his deep fly ball only made it to the warning track and was caught by right fielder Abdiel Marcano.
For Prince George's (7-17, 3-14 MD JUCO), starting pitcher Shahrukh Ali went the distance and kept Harford hitters at bay for the majority of the day. He was not overpowering, as evidenced by him only striking out one batter in the game, but he did a good job of preventing Harford hitters from putting the barrel of the bat on the ball. He gave up 10 hits and only one walk and three of the five runs he gave up were earned.
Marcano went 1-for-4 from the plate with his lone hit being a two-run home run over the shallow centerfield fence in the bottom of the first inning. The blast gave Prince George's a lead, 2-1 at the time, one they would never relinquish.
Prince George's would go on to score two in the third and one each in the fifth and sixth innings to build a 6-1 lead over the Fighting Owls. Ali took it from there, pitching five consecutive scoreless innings after giving up a run in the opening frame.
Harford would put together a big inning in the seventh inning, scoring three times to cut Prince George's lead to two at 6-4.
Jake Molison led off the inning and
Tyler Napierala followed with a sharp single to right field. On the play, Marcano bobbled the ball and let it get past him, allowing Molison to advance to third and Napierala to take second base. They would each come in to score on
CJ Young and
Rob Koski's back-to-back sacrifice flies. Brittain kept the inning going and Joseph followed with an RBI double in the right-centerfield gap.
Chad Bronson got the start on the mound for Harford. The right-handed freshman worked five innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out three.
Alex Eckenrode pitched three inning in relief and he gave up a run on two hits and two wild pitches with one strikeout.
Brittain went 3-for-5 from the plate with a run and an RBI. Napierala was the only other Harford player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and also getting hit by pitch twice to reach base a total of four times. Koski went 0-for-2 but drove in two runs, both on sacrifice flies, and walked once.
Harford will look to stop a three-game skid as they return home Tuesday to face Anne Arundel whom they lost to in extras 2-1 earlier this month. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
