Baseball Rallies Late, Holds Off Anne Arundel

Box Score BEL AIR, Md. -- The Fighting Owls used a six-run ninth inning to rally past Anne Arundel and closer Ben Collincini stranded the tying run on third base to give Harford an 8-7 victory.

Harford (21-21-1, 14-9 MD JUCO) scored all eight of their runs in the seventh and eighth innings, erasing a 4-0 deficit in the process en route to climbing back to a .500 record on the season. Collincini entered the game in the ninth with runners on first and second with no outs and navigated his way to his fourth save of the season. He stranded the tying run at third base, striking Alex Morinville out swinging with a heater to secure the win for Harford.

John Krauss led off the ninth for the Pioneers and reached base on a throwing error by short stop CJ Young. Right-handed pitcher John Hetterman, who started the inning for Harford, surrendered a walk to Connor Staihr, forcing head coach Tom Eller to go to Collincini out of the bullpen.

Dallas Ducote was able to muscle a bloop single over the head of Justin Malehorn at first base. Right fielder Tyler Napierala attempted to throw out Krauss at third base but his throw skipped past third baseman Brandon Smith, allowing Krauss to score and for Staihr and Ducote to move up a base. Forest Lewis hit a sacrifice fly to right field, deep enough for Staihr to score and for Ducote to move up to third. Ducote would score on a wild pitch by Collincini and all of a sudden Harford's four-run lead coming into the inning was cut to one with just one out.

Collincini was able to strike out Braden Goughenour but walked Brent Orbell to put the tying run on base. With Morinville batting and a one ball, one strike count, Collincini threw a wild pitch, allowing Orbell to advance to second. On the very next pitch, a ball to make the count 3-1, Orbell got a huge jump and stole third base uncontested. Collincini buckled down though and made two great pitches to pull the game out of the fire. He spotted a fastball to run the count full and blew another one by Morinville to secure the comeback win for the Fighting Owls.

Harford rallied for six runs in the bottom of the eighth after scoring two in the seventh, pulling ahead 8-4. The eight runs in two innings was a big turnaround from the first six innings in which they couldn't string together enough hits to score and sustain a rally.

In the big inning, Harford sent 10 batters to the plate, stringing together five singles and taking advantage of two walks, a hit by pitch, two errors and two wild pitches. Craig Joseph scored from third on a wild pitch by Corey Leszcznyski to tie the game and Daulton Weeks' RBI single drove in Joe Sheeran to give Harford a 5-4 lead.

In the seventh inning, Harford finally broke through after the offense struggled for the first six innings of the game. Cody Brittain worked a full-count walk, Craig Joseph was hit by a pitch and Sheeran laid down a bunt single to load the bases. Weeks followed, jumping on a first-pitch fastball and crushing a double over the head of Ducote in right field, pushing across two runs for Harford.

Anthony Atticks got the start on the mound for Harford and pitched a solid 6 2/3 innings, broken up halfway through by a one hour and 20 minute lightning delay. He gave up four earned runs on ten hits and five walks with four strike outs. He gave up two runs in the first and a run in the fourth inning before the delay, and gave up a run in the seventh just before he was lifted from the game.

Hetterman pitched 1 1/3 innings out of the bullpen and was credited with the win. He was charged with two runs (one earned), giving up just a walk. Collincini pitched an inning and gave one earned run as well as allowing two inherited runners to score. He gave up a hit and a walk while striking out two.

Weeks and Sheeran both went 3-for-4 from the plate with a run scored. Weeks drove in three runs. Napierala went 2-for-4 from the plate with an RBI while also reaching base on a hit by pitch.

Harford continues a busy week as they host Mercer County on Wednesday. Game one of the two game set is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Harford Sports Complex.
