BEL AIR, Md. - The Region XX Champion Harford women's soccer team's season came to an end in the NJCAA District L Championship game on Saturday. The Fighting Owls lost to Spartanburg Methodist, 2-1.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the title game, just like in last's season's District L Final, but this time, the Fighting Owls were unable to tally three second-half tallies to claim the title.
Cyarah Wilson scored the game's first goal on a shot that Harford's
Jazmine Thacker would like to have back. In the game's 12th minute, Wilson sent a soft dribbler toward the goal and Thacker appeared to make the initial save, but the ball squeaked through the 'keeper's hands for an early 1-0 lead.
In the 36th minute, the Pioneers kept the pressure on to earn a corner kick. Lexi Garcia took the corner, and on a set play, received the ball back on the attack. She sent a low line-drive cross into the box for the Pioneers' leading scorer Sara Dorsett, who sent one past Thacker on the near post for a 2-0.
In the second half, the Fighting Owls found the back of the net in a familiar fashion. All-Region freshman
Abbie Springer sent another perfect corner into the box to the head of All-Region sophomore
Angela Kuhn for her MD JUCO-leading 19th tally, cutting the lead in half. Harford had a few more scoring chances to net the equalizer, but came up short each time. Another corner from Springer went over the top, and with just moments remaining, SMC goalie Lara Jackson timed her run perfectly and stuffed Kuhn's last chance point blank to send the Pioneers to their first ever NJCAA National Tournament.
The Fighting Owls wrap up the 2015 campaign with their fifth Region XX Championship and a 9-5-0 record.
