ROCKVILLE, Md. - For the third consecutive season, the Harford women's basketball team will play in the MD JUCO Championship Game. The Fighting Owls knocked of the host Raptors of Montgomery on Semifinal Saturday, 80-70.
Ashley Hightower powered the squad into the finals with her second double-double of the tournament, 14 points and a career-high 24 rebounds. The Raptors scored on the first possession of the game, but Harford scored 22 of the next 30 points to take the lead for good and cruise to the victory.
The Fighting Owls will be in search of the first MD JUCO Championship in school history after falling the previous two seasons. Chesapeake pulled out a 59-53 victory at Harford in 2013, while Baltimore City earned a 61-58 win in 2014. On Sunday, the Fighting Owls will have to defeat Hagerstown for the third time this season to earn the coveted crown.
Jazmin Johnson led all scorers with 22 points and six assists while
Ashley Smith chipped in with 20 points and nine rebounds.
Mia Fitts netted double figures for the second playoff game with 14 points.
The Fighting Owls were a perfect 14-for-14 from the free throw line, making the team 22-for-22 from the charity stripe in this tournament. It is also the fourth time this year the team was perfect from the line in a game.
The No. 4 Hagerstown Hawks upset the defending champion and top-seeded Baltimore City Panthers, 78-66. The Fighting Owls and Hawks will play for the title at noon on Sunday.
