Women's Hoops Aims For Three-Peat

BEL AIR, Md. - Michael Jordan and the the Chicago Bulls made the phrase common place, but the 2015 Harford women's basketball team will be the latest team in search of a Three-Peat. The two-time defending Region XX Champions host Baltimore City on Thursday inside the APG Federal Credit Union Arena for the 2015 NJCAA Region XX Championship.

Michael Seney has his Fighting Owl squad playing its best basketball after winning the program's first MD JUCO Tournament Championship and riding an 11-game win streak. The Fighting Owls have won 20 of its last 21 games, dating back to the last time they saw the Panthers, an 89-81 loss on their home floor. But how things have changed for Harford.

Two weeks later, the Fighting Owls won a hard-fought game against Volunteer State at home and won all three games in North Carolina to claim the Brunswick Holiday Tournament Title. When the calendar turned to 2015, Harford had a brand-new point guard and an entirely new team was transformed.

Jazmin Johnson's addition added more depth to the deepest team in the conference, and the Fighting Owls were off and running. Prior to the flashy point guard becoming eligible, Harford averaged 80.8 points per game, including 69.0 ppg in the three holiday tournament victories. Since Johnson stepped on the floor, the Fighting Owls are 14-1 and average 93.6 ppg, almost 13 points higher. Harford has scored over 100 points five times in 2015, including shattering the school record with 139 points scored against Frederick.

Overall, the Fighting Owls rank fourth in the nation with 87.3 ppg and second with 993 field goals made. All five members of the starting five average at least 13.0 ppg, the only team in the nation that can boast that claim. It truly is pick your poison for the Fighting Owls, as Johnson leads the way with 21.1 ppg, followed closely by Ashley Smith's 16.8 ppg clip. Mia Fitts adds 13.9 ppg, while the Harford frontcourt of Ashley Hightower and Jasalyn Denkins chip in with 13.9 ppg and 13.1 ppg, respectively.

The Fighting Owls also dish the rock among the nation's best, ranking seventh with 19.7 assists per game. Smith became the third Fighting Owl in the last three years to record her 1,000 point, but she also ranks 10th nationally with 157 helpers. Zana Godoy, who shifted to the sixth-man role when Johnson joined in, ranks second on the team with 111 assists. Harford also ranks in the top 10 nationally with a 46.7 field-goal percentage (10th) and 216 3-pointers made (10th).

Baltimore City enters the APGFCU Arena with a 22-7 record and a tough squad. The two teams have played so evently in the past seven meetings, that the Panthers own a 4-3 record and hold just a one-point advantage on total points scored. However, the Fighting Owls have won the last two games that truly mattered, the 2013 & 2014 Region Championship contests.

BCCC may be one of the most physical teams in the area, and its style of play reflects that. The Panthers lead the nation with 545 free throws made and rank third with 16.9 steals per game. Michelle Wright ranks 10th nationally with 20.9 ppg and third with 158 free throws made and 107 steals.

The contest tips at 7:10 p.m. inside the APGFCU Arena on Thursday. Ken Krsolovic will have the radio call on WAMD & WHFC. Fans unable to make it to the contest can listen live here or watch live here.
