BEL AIR, Md. - Harford baseball continued to roll Wednesday afternoon, picking up two more wins against SUNY Adirondack and pushing their streak to seven wins in succession. The Fighting Owls (8-3) coasted to a 5-2 win in game one and used a 14-run first inning to ambush their way to a win in game two, 22-0.
Â
It was the second sweep of SUNY Adirondack (0-4) in three days for the Fighting Owls as they put up double-digit runs in all but one of the four games played. Combined, Harford scored 50 runs against the Timberwolves and allowed only five.
Â
Harford 5, SUNY Adirondack 2Brandon Smith and
CJ Young led the way in game one as both infielders hit crucial doubles to plate runs in a close game. Young hit a laser over the head of Adirondack centerfielder Frank Acker in the third inning to plate
Logan Mummert, who doubled to lead the inning off. That gave Harford a 1-0 lead at the time.
Â
Smith lined a two-run double to the left-center field gap, plating what would eventually become the game-winning run, in the fourth. Harford manufactured a pair of runs in that inning after the big hit from Smith.
Ben Bomberger combined on a double steal for Harford's fourth run of the game. Bomberger stole second base and Dean stole home, beating the throw from second which got away from catcher David Bevins, allowing Bomberger to advance to third. He came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Mummert to cap the scoring in four run frame.
Â
Austin Griffie (1-0) made the start for Harford, his first of the season, pitching five scoreless innings en route to the win. He gave up three hits and two walks while striking out four.
Dominic DiSabatino made his first appearance on the mound, coming in from short stop to pitch the seventh. He pitched a perfect frame to secure the save for Harford, picking up a strikeout to end the game.
Â
Harford 22, Adirondack 0Game two was defined by a monster first inning at the plate for the Fighting Owls. Harford scored 14 runs in the inning on nine hits, five walks and a hit by pitch. Harford got doubles from Young, Mummert,
Jamal Clarke, and
Brett Hash, and a triple from
Jack Hamner. They strung together seven hits in a row with two outs as the team batted around twice.
Â
Young got on base on two out of his three plate appearances in the inning, with a walk to lead the game off and a bases loaded double that plated three RBI. He scored twice and stole a base in the inning before being subbed out of the game.
Â
Clarke went four-for-four with five runs batted in and three runs scored, coming up a home run shy of the cycle. He just missed a home run in Harford's other big inning, an eight-run third, nearly leaving the yard on a drive the other way to right-center off the wall. He instead had to settle for a triple on the play.
Â
Hamner went three-for-three with two walks, driving in two and scoring three runs. Hash, Mummert,
John Mastrangelo and
Anthony Governale each drove in two runs.
Â
Chad Bronson,
Anthony Vattuone,
Michael Hanafin and
Chase DeMars combined for the shutout, surrendering just three hits and two walks. Bronson made his first start of the season and was credited with the win. Like DiSabatino in game one, DeMars toed the rubber after playing in the infield, pitching the fifth and final inning in the 10-run rule shortened contest. He struck out two in a dominant frame of work.
Â
Harford's home stand continues on Thursday at 3 p.m. as they open up conference play against Cecil. Originally scheduled to travel to North East, Harford will instead host the contest due to the weather over the past couple weeks. Harford's home game against Cecil on April 9th will now be a road game.
