Joines Throws No-No, Shultz One-Hitter

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
ABERDEEN, Md. - Freshmen pitchers Desi Joines and Katie Shultz were the stars of the best home opener in school history on Saturday as the Harford softball team (2-1) defeated Cayuga (0-2), 9-0 and 9-1.

Joines tossed a no-hitter while striking out 14 batters of the 15 outs. The lone contact made against the ace was a weak fourth inning pop up to shortstop. Joines walked three and of her 14 whiffs, 10 were swinging. In the nightcap, Shultz struck out 10 batters while allowing just one two-out single in the third. She walked two batters and went 2-for-3 with three RBIs at the plate.

Both contests finished early with the 8-run rule, but the second contest had a little drama on the rainy afternoon. Leading 8-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Bethanie Cook stepped to the plate and sliced a sharp line drive to the centerfield wall. The speedy outfielder raced around the bases for her first home run, an inside-the-park, walkoff winner.

Cook and Shultz totaled four hits on the day and all nine starters had at least one hit in the doubleheader sweep. Mackenzie Fitzgerald had a pair of two-out run-scoring hits in the second game.

The Fighting Owls and Spartans are back at it on Sunday at noon at Cal Ripken Sr. Field in Aberdeen, Md.
