BEL AIR, Md. - The No. 3 Harford women's lacrosse team (4-2) jumped out to a large lead and held on in the second half to defeat No. 5 Nassau (2-2), 16-13. Harford held a 9-3 advantage at the break and had to hold off a furious comeback bid by the Lions to seal the deal.
Lacy Underhill,
Karley Bush and
Lauren Haggerty all scored four goals in the win. Underhill led all scorers wtih eight points, adding four helpers for the Fighting Owls. Underhill and Haggerty were strong in the opening moments, scoring three goals each to give Harford a 6-1 lead. Underhill assisted on two of Haggerty's tallies and Haggerty returned the favor once.
Harford continued the offensive show to build a 9-1 lead before allowing back-to-back quick goals before intermission. After the break, Underhill netted her fourth of the game from
Megan Aro, who also finished with four assists, in the first few seconds, but the Lions scored the next four tallies to make it a contest. The Fighting Owls called a timeout to regroup and answered with four-straight of their own, but Nassau responded with six of the next seven goals and trailed, 15-13 with 3:00 remaining.
The Lions won the draw after their 13th goal and had one shot to cut it to one, but freshman keeper
Allie Storke made her biggest save of the game. The Fighting Owls were then able to successfully bleed the clock and add an insurance goal with 16 seconds left to secure the win.
Storke finished with 14 saves, one off of her career-high set earlier this week.
Caroline Esslinger scored two goals and
Natalie Decker added a goal and a pair of assists in the win.
Brittany Minsky also scored for Harford.
The Fighting Owls travel to Southern Maryland on Thursday at 4 p.m.
