Baseball Splits With Hagerstown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HAGERSTOWN, Md. - No. 18 Harford split a doubleheader with Hagerstown Saturday afternoon, falling 10-0 in game one and bouncing back with a 29-2 win in game two. Harford (29-6, 16-1 MD JUCO) bounced back to score a  season-high in runs in game two after being shutout for the first time this spring in game one.

Hagerstown 10, Harford 0
The Fighting Owls saw their potent offense stifled for the first time in weeks in game one. Hagerstown (24-10, 10-5 MD JUCO) sent their ace, Alex Cuas (4-3) to the hill and he delivered, shutting Harford down completely. He allowed just one hit, an infield single by Ben Bomberger, and struck out four en route to the shutout.

Josh Silvestri struggled on the mound for Harford, allowing a season-high eight earned runs on eleven hits and a walk in four innings of work. Silvestri was able to minimize the damage in innings one and two and seemed to be settling in with a pair of 1-2-3 innings in the third and fourth but was knocked out of the game in the fifth inning.

The Hawks exploded for seven runs in the decisive fifth inning as all eight hitters to bat in the inning recorded a hit. Hagerstown notched five hits, including three doubles off of Silvestri before he was replaced by Mike Hanafin. Hanafin was unable to stop the bleeding, allowing a pair of singles and a double as Hagerstown walked off with the 10-run rule win.

The loss ended Harford's undefeated run to start the MD JUCO slate and snapped an 11-game win streak overall.

Harford 29, Hagerstown 2
There was absolutely no carryover from game one to game two for the Fighting Owl hitters as they scored a season-high 29 runs in the night cap. Harford blitzed Hagerstown with a nine-run first inning and erased any thoughts of a comeback with a 15 spot in the fourth inning.

Entering the day, there had been only two home runs hit at Hagerstown's home field. Harford hitters made it look like every other field they've played at this season, churning out 24 hits including five home runs. It was the third game of at least five home runs this season. Harford now has hit 56 home runs this season, fourth most in the nation.

Ben Bomberger, fresh off a two-homer game Thursday, started the fireworks, launching a three-run homer to dead centerfield in the first inning. It was his fourth long ball of the season. Bomberger has been on a tear over the last week. He has gone 12-for-16 over the last four games, raising his batting average to .515 on the season, sitting second in the nation. He has three home runs and 14 runs batted-in over the same stretch.

Harford registered eight hits in the opening frame while sending 13 men to the plate. Jack Hamner and Joe Sheeran each had two hits in the inning. Sheeran had an RBI single and an RBI double. Hamner touched the plate twice, scoring two of his team-high four runs in the game.
