Hamner Hammers Catonsville, 11-1

BEL AIR, Md. - The 2015 season has proven that you never know which Fighting Owl will be in the spotlight on any given night. On Thursday, it was freshman outfielder Jack Hamner who carried the No. 18 Harford baseball team to an 11-1 victory over CCBC Catonsville on Thursday.

Hamner hit three home runs as the first-place Fighting Owls dropped the Cardinals to improve to 18-2 in the MD JUCO Standings. He led off the bottom of the first with a solo shot, connected on a two-run homer in the fourth and blasted a three-run bomb in the fifth for six RBIs on the night. Hamner's three home runs set a single-game school record.

John Mastrangelo set the single-season home run record with his 11th of the year, a solo blast in the fifth. He bested the previous mark of 10 set in 2010 by Joe Harbach and Christian Wolfe. Brett Hash also has 10 home runs this season.

Fresh off of winning the NJCAA National Player of the Week Award, Ben Bomberger extended his hot streak with a home run in his first at bat. He went 2-for-3 with two runs and two knocked in.

Brandon Smith was one of seven Fighting Owls with a hit in the run-shortened affair. Bomberger (.541), Hamner (.506) and Smith (.486) currently rank second, third and fifth, respectively, in the nation in hitting. As a team, the Fighting Owls continue to lead the NJCAA with a .413 batting average, a .523 on-base percentage, a .751 slugging percentage and 468 runs scored. Harford ranks fourth in the nation and first in the MD JUCO by a wide margin with 65 home runs

Josh Houser pitched brilliantly to improve to 3-1 on the season. The righthander tossed six innings of one-run baseball. He scattered six hits, struck out seven and walked three.

Harford hosts Allegany on Saturday for a conference DH with a first pitch scheduled for noon. The event, paired with a lacrosse doubleheader at Harford Stadium, will be part of a family-friendly event, the Fighting Owl Fest.
