THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Harford 0, Essex 1
  • Records: Harford 8-9-1, Essex 14-5-0

  • The Short Story:  Both teams came into the game expecting a dog fight, and that is exactly what happened as Essex grinded out a 1-0 win over Harford.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The lone goal of the game occurred with just a couple of minutes before halftime when a failed clearance bounced right to Essex's Javier Avetrani who hammered it into the lower left corner of the net from the middle of the goal box.
  • A very tough Knights defensive line made it difficult for the Fighting Owls to get many good chances in the game. While Harford did test the Knight's goalkeeper five times in the game, only a few real scoring opportunities opened for the under dog Fighting Owls.
  • Jerry Washington provided the most exciting chance as a long through ball by Ayoub Fouadi opened up space for Washington to run behind the Knight's defense. However, Washington didn't quite hit his shot cleanly as it was ultimately a comfortable save for goalkeeper Trevor Brookhart.
  • The defensive line of the Fighting Owls deserves a lot of credit as the foursome of Frank Assaro, Brandon Klepetka, Pat Kiley, and Jake Ross held a potent Essex team from getting close to the Harford goal for much of the game.
  • Harford was able to get a few last gasp chances off of free kicks, but a shot by Fouadi sailed over the goal post and a long free kick into the box with just a minute left in the game was cleared out before Harford could get a foot on it.

GAME NOTES
  • Larsen Green, the hero of the regular season win over the Knights as he scored both of the goals in the upset victory, was held without a shot in the game.
  • Klepetka and Fouadi led the Fighting Owls with 2 shots each, however all of these attempts came from long range.
  • The Fighting Owls goalkeeper Peterson was able to tally 6 saves in the game including one fantastic sprawling save from a close range effort.
  • Essex will face Frederick on Saturday, October 29th for the Region 20 championship.
UP NEXT
  • Harford's season comes to an end with this defeat in a year that could only be described as a roller coaster season.
  • While the team should return a good number of very talented freshmen, it will be difficult to replace several key sophomores who will be moving on. In particular, the Fighting Owls must replace 3/4 of their defensive line as Jake Ross, Pat Kiley, and co-captain Klepetka will all be graduating, Other key losses include midfielder and the other co-captain Drew Adams and top goalscorer Washington.
