Fighting Owls fall just short of breaking NJCAA record

The Short Story: The Harford women's basketball team nearly broke the NJCAA record for most points by a team in a game, falling just one point short as they defeated the Howard Dragons 146-14.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Harford got out to a great start, scoring 32 points before the Dragons put a single point on the scoreboard.
  • The Fighting Owls challenged the NJCAA women's basketball record as they put up 146 points despite their starters playing just seven minutes each. 
  • With the bench getting the bulk of the playing time, a different group of stars emerged in the game led by Joy Morton with 24 points on 9-11 shooting and 7 rebounds.
  • Adrienne Jones scored 23 points along with 4 steals in just 18 minutes of play.
  • Tolulope Otoki had another fantastic game as she dropped 20 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.
  • Nichole Collins came close to a triple-double with 17 points, 9 assists, and 6 steals in 16 minutes of play.
  • The starters played six and a half minutes of near flawless basketball with Danielle Durjan finding her long-range shot going 3-4 from behind the arc and Daisa Harris picking up 6 assists.
GAME NOTES:
  • Harford shot 61.5% from the floor and 40% from behind the arc while also compiling 37 steals.
  • The Fighting Owls had 114 points come from their bench.
  • As for Howard, they shot 12.5% from the field and 0-15 from behind the arc along with 52 turnovers.
  • Harford broke the NJCAA Division I record for most team steals in a game with 37. The previous record was 30 held by the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith in the 2008-09 season against Eastern Oklahoma State.
  • The NJCAA record for most points in a women's basketball regular season game at Division I was by ASA with 183 points in 2010. Before that, the record was held by Johnson County with 145 points in 1990 which means Harford scored the 2nd most points in a game in NJCAA history.
  • The Fighting Owls also came close to breaking the record for most forced turnovers, falling just one short.

  • Harford will take a bit of a break before traveling to Southern Maryland on Wednesday, November 30th at 5 pm.
  • The Southern Maryland Hawks are 1-3 on the season and 1-1 in conference play after beating Howard then losing to Garrett.
