Box Score 2 SUMTER, S.C. – On day 2 of opening weekend, the Harford Baseball team swept a doubleheader with USC Sumter. The Fighting Owls (3-1) took game one 4-1 and game two by a score of 3-2.
Daulton Weeks homered in both games to lead the charge on offense.
Harford 4, USC Sumter 1Four runs in the fourth was the difference for the Fighting Owls in game one. Entering the inning Harford had been held hitless but in the fourth they hit balls with authority and reaped the rewards.
Chase DeMars lead the inning off with a deep fly ball to right center that bounced off the glove of the centerfielder and caromed off the wall. DeMars rounded second with thoughts of a possible inside the park home run but would settle for a triple, his second in the young season.
Dominic DiSabatino drove DeMars in with a sharp single that ricocheted off of the pitcher's leg towards the second baseman who was unable to gather the ball in time to get an out. Weeks delivered the first of his two homers on the day, driving a no-doubt shot to left field to plate two runs. Two batters later,
Luke Belt drew a walk and
JP Vail drove him home with a fly ball that hit the bottom of the wall in center for a double, making it 4-0.
Mike Adams was able to cruise through six innings on the mound despite falling behind in counts on numerous occasions in the first couple innings. He showed the ability to bear down and make good pitches when he needed to, never allowing the Fire Ants to build a threat until the sixth inning. He kept his pitch count down thanks, in part, to a pair of double play balls. He gave up just one run on four hits and three walks.
TJ Pagan came on with two men on and one out in the seventh to nail down the save. He struck out two and gave up a single.
Harford 3, USC Sumter 2Michael Devecchio pitched a gem in game two to help the Fighting Owls complete the sweep. The freshman southpaw was dominant on the hill, striking out 12 batters in his Harford debut. Devecchio kept USC Sumter hitters off balance with his offspeed offerings. He gave up two runs on six hits, including a solo home run, and four walks over six innings.
The Fighting Owls only managed three hits in the night cap but two of the three were home runs.
Ben Bomberger launched a solo shot to left to tie the game at one in the second. Then after a leadoff double by DeMars in the fourth, Weeks hit a laser over the wall in left center for a two-run homer.
Weeks and DeMars were monsters over the four games against the Fire Ants. DeMars ripped five extra-base hits (three doubles and two triples), scored three runs and drove in four. Weeks had two home runs, a double and six runs batted in.
William Reed came on to close the game and displayed an electric fastball that ranged from 92 to 95 MPH. He struck out two in perfect frame to lockdown the save.
The Fighting Owls will be back in action on Friday when they play their home opener. Harford will take on Mercyhurst Northeast in a single game Friday at 2 p.m. The two teams will meet again at the Harford Sports Complex Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
