Baseball Clips Catonsville, 7-6

Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – The Harford baseball team captured a big win Wednesday afternoon, defeating CCBC Catonsville, 7-6, in a back and forth affair.

Harford (12-6, 4-1 MD JUCO) never trailed in the game but every time they put runs on the board, Catonsville (12-7-1, 3-2 MD JUCO) answered back with runs of their own. Dominic DiSabatino hit a two-run double in the first inning to put the Fighting Owls on the board, 2-0.

The Cardinals answered with two runs to tie it in the bottom half. They loaded the bases and Christian Laidley singled to drive in two knot the game up.

The Fighting Owls went back ahead, 3-2 in the second inning thanks to a couple singles and an error. After a one out single by Max Joseph, Jack Hamner got on with a swinging bunt. On the attempt to throw Hamner out, catcher Edward Nottingham threw wide allowing Joseph to score from second.

Catonsville came back again in the bottom of the third inning with a run to tie it. Matthew Thomas drew a leadoff walk and Nottingham, making amends for his error in the second, doubled to right center, putting runners on second and third. Brandon O'Malley drove in the tying run with a groundout to second.

DiSabatino hit another double in the fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie, scoring Ben Bomberger from third. Both of his run scoring two-baggers came with two men down.

Chase DeMars gave the Fighting Owls some breathing room in the seventh with a mammoth 2-run home run to left center that smashed off the scoreboard. It was his fourth home run of the season.

Catonsville first baseman Jordan Sanders answered with a wall-scraping three-shot in the bottom of the seventh to pull the Cardinals back within a run.

TJ Pagan came on in the eighth and shut the door, getting six outs to secure his fourth save of the season. He induced a ground ball with one on and one out in the ninth and DeMars and DiSabatino combined to turn a game-ending 4-6-3 double play.

Michael Devecchio (2-2) tossed 5 1/3 innings to earn the win. He allowed three earned runs on six hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. Over four starts and one relief appearance, Devecchio has struck out 38 batters.

Pagan notched his fourth save of the season. He gave up one hit and a walk with one strikeout.

DeMars was 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs batted in. DiSabatino was 3-for-5 as well with three runs batted in.

The Fighting Owls have an off day Thursday before they host Penn State Mount Alto Friday.  First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
