ARNOLD, Md. – The No. 4 Harford women's lacrosse team played a strong game defensively and outscored Anne Arundel 8-4 in the second half to edge the Riverhawks, 12-10, Wednesday evening.
Harford (5-1, 3-0 MD JUCO) were down 6-4 at halftime but turned it around in the second half to get the win and stay undefeated in conference play. One big factor in the turnaround for the Fighting Owls was evening things up on draw controls. Anne Arundel (5-3, 1-1 MD JUCO) dominated face offs in the first half to the tune of 9-2. But Harford stepped it up, winning the draw control battle 7-6 in the second half.
With the game tied, the Riverhawks scored with 16:57 left in the second half to go ahead 9-8. The Fighting Owls answered right back with a goal at the 16:43 mark to tie it back up at nine apiece. From there, Harford scored three more unanswered goals over the next 10 minutes to build a four-goal lead. Anne Arundel scored with 4:17 left but was unable to close the gap as Harford's defense led them to a big conference win.
Lauren Haggerty and
Cassidy Jones were at the heart of Fighting Owls attack offensively. Haggerty scored five goals and assisted on one. She is second in the conference with 29 goals and second on the team with 37 points overall. Jones scored a hat trick and assisted on five goals including four of Haggerty's five goals. She leads the conference with 28 assists and leads the team with 41 points.
Sierra Donovan registered two goals and an assist.
Karlie Abbott and
Olivia Dowling scored a goal each.
Harford will travel to Buffalo, N.Y. Friday to take on Erie. The match will start at 4 p.m.
