Softball Drops Two To Montgomery

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROCKVILLE, Md. – The Harford softball team were swept on the road by Montgomery Wednesday. Harford (4-18, 0-8 MD JUCO) were beaten 8-0 in game one before falling 3-2 in extra innings in game two.

Harford 0, Montgomery 8 (5)
Montgomery (8-3, 5-1 MD JUCO) scored four runs in the fifth inning to end the game early on the run rule. Amanda Hildebrandt, who pitched in all of Harford's games to date, was out due to illness Wednesday. In her absence, Julia Sanders (0-1) stepped into the circle to make the first start of her career. She performed admirably through four innings, holding the Raptors to four runs on four hits, but was unable to record an out in the fifth.

The Fighting Owls collapsed as a team in the fatal fifth inning as their defense let them down with a pair of errors. The Raptors strung together a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases to open the frame. They pushed four runs across with an error, a walk, another error and finally a walk to end the game.

Harford played excellent defense through the first four innings. They didn't commit any errors and Sanders helped herself, starting a pair of double plays. In the first, she showed off her reflexes, catching a comebacking line drive and alertly throwing to first to double the runner off, ending the inning. In the third she fielded another comebacker and started a 1-2-3 double play to keep a run off the board.

Offensively, the Fighting Owls only managed three hits in the contest. Sanders, Linsey Fenner and Allyssa Lyons each notched hits in the game. Fenner also drew a walk and P.Imani Gilliard was hit by a pitch.

Harford 2, Montgomery 3 (8)
Harford lost game two in heartbreaking fashion as they first gave up the tying run with two outs in the seventh and then, under international tiebreaker rules, were walked off with two down in the eighth.

Lindsey Fenner (0-3) made her third start of the season in the nightcap and came within an out of helping the Fighting Owls notch their first conference win of the season. Over 7 2/3 innings, Fenner gave up two earned runs on six hits and three walks. She set a career-high with five strikeouts in the game.

Gilliard and Mel Schoolfield both drove in a run in a two-run second inning for the Fighting Owls. Jazmyn Gutshall was hit by a pitch to lead the inning off and with one out, Gilliard lined a triple to right field on the first pitch she saw, scoring Gutshall from first base. Schoolfield stepped into the box next and, down 0-2 in the count in her first career at bat, lined a double to right field to score Gilliard from third. She started her career off with a bang and put Harford up 2-0. She was moved to third on a single by Lyons but was stranded as Harford was unable to tack on more.

From that point on, Fighting Owl hitters managed just one hit over the next six innings. Special Zeno was extra special for the Raptors as she pitched a gem and hit a walk-off double to sink the Fighting Owls. She struck out 12 Harford hitters over eight innings, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks. Then with two outs and a runner on third in the eighth, she lined a double to centerfield to secure the sweep for Montgomery.

Harford will be back in action on Friday as they host Hagerstown for a pair of contests. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
