Baseball Hits 7 HR in Camden County Sweep

BEL AIR, Md. – The Harford baseball team slugged their way to a sweep of Camden County Thursday. The Fighting Owls cranked out a record breaking seven home runs in a 14-12 win in game one and cruised to a 7-3 win in game two.

Harford 14, Camden County 12
Harford (22-7) bombed their way to victory in game one, hitting seven home runs, a team record for a single game. They needed every last one of the long balls they hit as Camden County (11-11) refused to go down easily in the opener, hitting four homers of their own.

Joe Burton and Dominic DiSabatino started things off for the Fighting Owls in the first, going back-to-back to put Harford up 4-0. Burton roped a laser out of the ballpark to left center for a three-run shot. It was his sixth of the season. DiSabatino wasted no time adding on to the lead, jumping on the first pitch and hitting a solo shot to center field for his sixth of the season.

Camden County designated hitter Nick Ezzi answered with a solo shot in the second to get the Cougars on the board.

Chase DeMars launched a moon shot down the left field line in the bottom of the second to put Harford up 5-1. It was his seventh of the season.

Short stop L.T. Struble hit a two-run home run into the trees in right field in the third inning. Then, with runners on first and second, and two down, John Lindeborn hit an infield single. Nick Delp was unable to scoop Daulton Weeks' throw from third on the play, allowing Brett Kuchera to round third and score, making it a 5-4 ballgame.

With their lead cut to one run, Harford strung together six hits, including home runs by Weeks and DiSabatino, to plate six runs. Weeks led the inning off with a solo shot to left center, his eighth of the season. After a Burton single, DiSabatino hit his second long ball of the game and seventh of the season to left field, putting Harford up 8-4. DiSabatino has left the yard four times over his last six games.

After a pitching change, JP Vail came up just short in his bid for a home run, launching a double to right field that bounced off the top of the wall and back into play. Right fielder Frank Angeloni hit the wall hard in his attempt to make a play on the ball and was forced to leave the game with an apparent injury. Two batters later, Delp singled to left field bringing in Vail to score. Max Joseph followed that up with a two-run blast to left field. It was his third of the season and put Harford ahead, 11-4.

The Cougars would continue to fight back. Struble hit his second homer of the day in the fourth inning. He connected with a 3-2 pitch, hitting a two-run shot to right, making it 11-6 on the scoreboard.

The Fighting Owls went down in order in the bottom of the fourth and The Cougars continued to chip away in the fifth, scoring three more runs to pull within two runs at 11-9.

But Harford was able to answer back with three runs of their own in the bottom half. Ben Bomberger led the inning off with his third home run of the season, a shot to left field that put Harford up 12-9. Nick Delp followed with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and came around to score on an RBI single by DeMars. Weeks drew a walk and Burton was hit by pitch to load the bases. With DiSabatino at the plate, DeMars came home to score on a balk, pushing the Fighting Owls' lead to 14-9.

After being set down in order in the sixth inning, the Cougars made one last push in the seventh to make the game interesting. Brandon Sanchez hit a two-run homer to pull them to within three runs. After a pair of runners reached base, DiSabatino was called on from short stop to put out the fire. After walking the first batter he faced to load the bases, he induced a ground ball to DeMars, now playing short stop, who stepped on second and threw to first for a double play. A run scored on the play, making it 14-12, but DiSabatino was able to end the threat, getting the next batter out on a fly ball to left.

TJ Pagan (1-1) was credited with the win. He came on in the fifth with the bases loaded and got five key outs, including a three up, three down sixth. DiSabatino recorded his first save of the season.

Harford 7, Camden County 3
Both offenses were held at bay relative to the slugfest that took place in game one. John Brubaker (1-0) gave the Fighting Owls four solid innings on the mound, carrying a no-hitter into the fifth. His bid for the no-hitter was spoiled by Struble who laid down a perfect bunt for a base hit. Brubaker caught up to the slow roller that went past him on the first base side and attempted a glove flip to first, but Struble was able to beat it out. After walking the next batter he faced, Brubaker was lifted. He gave up two runs on one hit, six walks and a hit batter. He struck out four in the first win of his career.

The Fighting Owls fell behind in the top of the third, 2-0. The deficit was short lived as Harford responded with seven runs in the bottom half of the inning. After a one-out double by Colby Dean, Andrew Valichka legged out an infield single and Dean came around to score on the errant throw to first. Jack Hamner singled and DeMars drew a walk to load the bases. Weeks cleared the bases with a double and advanced to third on the throw to the plate. He would come home to score on a passed ball, putting Harford up 5-2. Burton and DiSabatino drew walks and moved up to second and third on a wild pitch. Toby Sponseller singled to drive them in, pushing Harford's lead to 7-2.

Delp and Aaron Gress finished the game out for Harford on the mound. Delp was first out of the bullpen in the fifth. He pitched two innings, giving up a run on a hit and a walk while striking out two. Gress pitched a scoreless seventh, striking out one and surrendering a walk.

Harford will host MD JUCO rival Frederick on Saturday. The doubleheader will begin at noon at Harford Sports Complex.
