Aces, Two-Out Rallies Lead To Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
KEYSER, W.Va. - The Harford baseball team (37-8) moved one step closer to earning the top seed at next month's Region XX Championships with a road sweep of Potomac State (23-19) on Sunday. The Fighting Owls won 5-1 in the opener and 6-3 in game two. In both contests, the Harford aces went the distance and all runs scored by the Fighting Owls were with two outs.

Harford 5, Potomac State 1
Michael Adams improved to 8-0 with his third complete game of the year, scattering four hits. He allowed a leadoff double and the Catamounts took a 1-0 lead on an RBI fielders choice, but the righthander settled in after that. Adams allowed his last hit with one out in the fifth and retired eight of the final nine batters he faced, working around a two-out walk.

The Fighting Owls did all their damage with two outs, taking the lead with a pair in the second, one in the fourth and two more in the sixth. Luke Johnson gave Harford the lead with a two-run triple, plating Daulton Weeks and Ben Bomberger. Both runs were unearned as Weeks reached on an error by the pitcher.

Bomberger extended the lead to 3-1 with a two-out RBI single in the fourth, bringing in Joe Burton who led the inning off with a walk. Bomberger put the game out of reach with a two-run single in the sixth. The Fighting Owl outfielder went 3-for-3 with three RBIs in the opener.

Harford 6, Potomac State 3
The Fighting Owls flipped a 3-2 deficit into a three-run lead with a four-run fifth inning. After the first two Harford batters were retired to start the frame, Chase DeMars and Burton drew walks and Weeks clubbed a bases-clearing triple to give the Fighting Owls the lead.

Weeks scored in the next at bat, as Jack Hamner reached on an error. Hamner then stole second and came all the way around to score on a pair of errors on the attempt.

Josh Silvestri improved to 7-0 and worked around a tough second inning. After the first batter reached on an error, Silvestri allowed three-straight, run-producing hits, a double, a triple and a single by the 6-7-8 Pot State hitters. Other than that inning, the righthander allowed just one single and retired the final 12 batters he faced.

With the victory, Harford needs to win just one game at Chesapeake on Friday to claim the top seed in the Region XX Championships held at Chesapeake on May13-15.
