BEL AIR, Md. - The Harford baseball team (46-9) set the program wins record with a 9-8 comeback victory over Delaware Club (20-1) on Tuesday night. The Fighting Owls scored the final eight runs of the game in the record-breaking 46th victory of the season.
Luke Johnson capped a five-run eighth inning with a two-run single to left field to give the Fighting Owls their first lead of the game. The freshman catcher's two-out knock plated
Joe Burton and
Andrew Valichka as Harford sent nine batters to the plate in the decisive frame.
Burton started the comeback in the seventh inning with a single that dropped between the shortstop and the centerfielder, plating
Jack Hamner. The outfielder tried to get
Dominic DiSabatino at third base, but the throw hit the Harford shortstop and ricocheted toward the mound. DiSabatino never stopped running and scored easily to make it 8-3, as
Chase DeMars scampered to third on the error. He scored on Johnson's sacrifice fly to center to cut the deficit in half, 8-4.
Burton and Hamner both collected two hits in the win, while seven other Fighting Owls had a base hit. DiSabatino drew three walks and scored twice while DeMars collected a pair of walks, scoring twice. Johnson's three RBIs was a team-high.
On a staff-day, the final three Harford pitchers shut the door on the previously undefeated Delaware Club offense.
Michael DellaMedaglia didn't allow a hit while striking out two in the seventh.
Riley Lane (2-0) got the win after tossing a perfect eighth and
Michael Devecchio notched the save, striking out the final two batters.
Andrew Carber was effective in his two innings, the lone Harford arm to pitch more than one frame, striking out three without allowing a base hit.
The Fighting Owls now prepare for the 2016 Region XX Championships at Chesapeake, beginning on Friday.
