 HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams came out firing in the first five minutes as the energy and pace of the game was blistering.
  • After the initial surge, the game slowed down significantly as the two sides resorted to trench war fare in the midfield.
  • As the tackles started to get harder, the cards began to fly as the referee pulled them out of his pocket eight times in the game including a late red card that saw Frederick go down to 10 men for the last couple of minutes into the game.
  • Harford was relegated to just one shot in the first 45 minutes while goalkeeper Michael Nelson was forced into making a couple of saves in the first half.
  • Nelso was again called into action in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza as he saved a long attempt by Carlos Granados Torres.
  • In the 57th minute, Frederick brought the ball down the left side then crossed it into the path of Kareen Salmon who had his point blank shot saved by Nelson only to see it bounce to Elmer Ochoa who knocked it into an empty net.
  • With just 10 seconds left and Harford still looking for their first shot on goal in the game, Fighting Owl defender Grant Stefan unloaded a long shot from the 50 yard line. The Cougars goalkeeper came off his line in an attempt to grab it, but misjudged the trajectory and the ball bounced over his head and appeared destined for the back of the net to tie the game. However, Frederick defender Lovet Cheg chased the ball down and made a sliding defensive save to knock the ball away with just seconds remaining to capture the victory for the Cougars.
  • Harford defenders Jason Stump and Enrique Castilho were named to the All-Region team for their efforts in the game.
  • The Fighting Owls' 12 wins and .684 winning percentage both rank as the second best in Harford men's soccer program history.
