Harford Completes Sweep Over Montgomery

  • The Short Story: The Harford baseball team struggled early but recovered nicely to pick up an important doubleheader sweep over conference foe Montgomery.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1
  • Harford jumped out to an early lead as Tanner Forry laced an RBI double to scored Tre Todd with Forry later scoring on a Luke Johnson sac-fly.
  • Starting pitcher Will Reed struggled to find the strike zone as Montgomery scored four runs in the second.
  • The Fighting Owls answered with a Ryan Shinn RBI single in the bottom half to cut the Raptors lead to 4-3.
  • That scored lasted until Harford broke out in the bottom of the fifth starting with a Luke Johnson dinger.
  • John Mastrangelo hit an RBI double to score Toby Sponseller and Toby Schwartz drove in Mastrangelo to take a 6-4 lead.
  • The two teams exchanged runs in the sixth inning, but Reid Frazier was able to shut the door in the seventh to pick up his first save of the season as relief pitcher Mike Taylor earned his second win of the year with five strikeouts in four innings pitched.
Game 2
  • Game two saw Montgomery jump out to a 1-0 lead in the first before Ronnie Krsolovic tied the game with an RBI single to score Joey Schwartz in the second.
  • The Raptors added two runs on a two run single in the third that was answered quickly by a two-run home run by Joey Schwartz; his first of the season.
  • The see-saw affair continued as Montgomery regained the lead with a run in the top of the fourth that Tanner Forry cancelled out with a home run to tie the game at 4-4
  • John Mastrangelo broke the tie in the fifth with a laser beam to left center that scored Ryan Shinn.
  • Harford put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth on a rally started by a Ronnie Krsolovic lead-off single.
  • CJ Lopez doubled to left center to score Krsolovic followed by an RBI single by Tanner Forry.
  • Toby Sponseller brought down the hammer a few batters later with a two run bomb to give the Fighting Owls a comfortable 10-4 lead.
  • Montgomery scored a run in the seventh on a wild pitch, but Briar Lauer closed out the game as Harford finished off the sweep.
  • Michael Devecchio pitched a solid six innings with four strikeouts, giving up four earned runs on seven hits.
  • Tanner Forry, Ryan Shinn, Joey Schwartz, and Ronnie Krsolovic all provided two-hit games to the Harford effort.
UP NEXT:
  • Harford will face another conference foe as they travel to CCBC Catonsville on Tuesday, March 23 for a 3 PM game.
  • The Cardinals are 4-6-1 on the season and 0-1-1 in conference play after they lost a game to Cecil and tied Prince George's.
