HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Julia Gatch replicated that feat as Harford now trailed by just two with the bases still loaded.
  • Savannah Meyers was up next and hit a line drive right at the left fielder to end the inning.
  • The Indians scored a run in the bottom half and Harford was unable threaten in the seventh as their season was unceremoniously ended.

QUOTES
  • Head coach Kelly Sylvester: "When I was recruiting this freshman class, I explained to many of them that this season was going to be the pioneering season for building Harford Softball.  They all were drawn to our F.A.M.I.L.Y. values of last year's team and signed on to chart their own course, which led us to Regionals. A fire ignited at Regionals! Conversations and excitement has already started about next year - we have a great class coming in.  It'll be so hard to say goodbye to Brittany and EW. Brittany's heart made the entire team better. EW did so much for this program over the years. I'll admit, in game 1, when EB was standing on third and EW was going into the batter's box, I teared up because I thought, "How fitting that EW gets to be the one to drive in the winning run." (I knew she was going to deliver; I just didn't know that they were going to tie the game back up to send us into extra innings.) As excited as I am about the direction of the program, it pales in comparison to being a part of the journey and growth these young ladies are on, like talking to Brittany and learning that she's going to be the first in her family to graduate from college! It truly has been and continues to be an honor to coach these remarkable student-athletes and it's exciting to see them reach heights they didn't know they could."
  • Sophomore catcher Emily Wikane: "From the start of the season, I knew we were going to be the team to beat. We ended up having some struggles that we had to fight our way through to become the team we knew we could be. I was excited when I learned regionals was within our reach and even more excited to earn a program first on our opening game win. I was really surprised to be named to the All-Tournament team but I made sure to put my whole heart onto that field. I am excited to take what I have learned at Harford to Penn College next year."
  • Sophomore infielder Brittany Bergquist: "When I first came in this year, it was a brand new team. I was surprised at how close we became. We had the goal of going to regionals and having fun. We put all our energy towards that. Now I know they'll stick with me once I move on to my next college, Towson, as will our values and being united in purpose."

UP NEXT
  • The Fighting Owls will be forced to say good bye to a couple of stellar sophomores in Emily Wikane and Brittany Bergquist.
  • Fortunately, Harford will return an excellent core of freshmen that will look to continue the improvement of the program.
