Baseball Opens Region Play Sunday in Quest to Return to Juco World Series

Fighting Owls enter tournament as #1 seed

Bel Air, Md - The Fighting Owls baseball team, fresh off clinching their third consecutive Md Juco Conference championship in the regular season, prepare for post season play beginning this weekend. With the rain forecasted for Friday and Saturday, the start of the tournament hosted by Hagerstown has been postponed to Sunday, May 14. The tournament will take place at the Municipal Stadium where the Hagerstown Suns Single A minor league baseball team play their home games.

Harford will go into the tournament as the #1 seed and the favorites to win the tournament although they will likely be pushed by rival Potomac State. In fact Harford and Potomac State have played in the Region 20 tournament final in each of the last five years with Harford winning in 2016, 2014 and 2012 while the Catamounts were victorious in 2015 and 2013. The two teams played against each other in the regular season in Bel Air, Md. as they split an exciting doubleheader. Harford returns just two players from the starting line-up that went all the way to the JUCO World Series in 2016 in Luke Johnson and Toby Sponseller while pitchers Will Brooke and John Brubaker also saw time in the 2016 regional tournament.

The Fighting Owls will begin their quest against the Chesapeake Skipjacks on Sunday, May 14 at 1:00 PM. The Skipjacks were swept at the Harford Sports Complex on April 1st as the Fighting Owls scored a combined 29 runs in the doubleheader. The winner of this tournament will have little time to rest as the victor will head to South Carolina to take part in the District Championships beginning on Thursday, May 18th with a bid to the NJCAA National Tournament on the line.

Harford, currently ranked #19 in the most recent NJCAA Division I poll, has put up some of the most impressive numbers in the whole country this year, hitting the most home runs in the NJCAA Division I with 129 in 56 games. They also lead the country in slugging percentage at .711 and doubles with 146 and are second in runs (629), RBIs (567), walks (356), on base percentage (.493) while coming fourth in stolen bases with 137.

All Harford games at the Region 20 Tournament will be live video streamed on Fighting Owl Vision which can be found on www.harfordathletics.com/watch.
