HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Anne Arundel had a couple of comfortable wins over the Fighting Owls in the regular season, things looked bleak for Harford when they conceded two goals in the first 75 seconds of the postseason contest.
  • Courtney Poole scored a couple of minutes later to get Harford on the board, but a Riverhawks goal 30 seconds later canceled it out.
  • A 10 minute goalless streak for both teams was broken by Poole with a free position goal and teammate Nina Urban scored a minute later to tie the game at 3-3.
  • On the ensuing draw, Urban picked up a yellow card which Anne Arundel converted less than 20 seconds later.
  • Down 6-3 halfway through the first period, Poole finished her hat trick on a great pass by Emily Stambaugh from behind the net to cut into the deficit.
  • Anne Arundel went on to score three of the last four goals of the half to take a 9-5 lead into the break.
  • Another Riverhawks goal out of halftime left Harford in dire straits, but a great individual effort by Sierra Donovan started the Fighting Owls rally.
  • With 20 minutes left in regulation, Karlie Abbott made a great defensive play to force a turnover and got the ball into the stick of Mackenzie Wills who went coast to coast and buried it into the top right corner of the net.
  • Abbott decided to take the ball down the field herself five minutes later and scored as Harford still trailed 11-8 with 15 minutes left.
  • Natalie Neff drew the difficult assignment of covering the talented Sofia Michael and did a great job of it except for getting a yellow card which Anne Arundel scored on to take back a 12-8 lead.
  • With their backs against a wall, Wills scored a free position shot followed by Julianna Butta scoring her first of the game to halve the Riverhawks lead.
  • The game really changed when Nina Urban was called for her second yellow card of the game with 11 minutes left which prematurely ended her participation in the game.
  • With Urban out, defender Cidney Gray was forced to work on the offense and scored on a great dish by Poole with six minutes left in the game and Harford trailed by just one.
  • The Riverhawks scored on a free position shot three minutes later to double their lead and Harford looked down and out when Poole was given Harford's fifth yellow card of the day.
  • A turnover by Anne Arundel was picked up by Butta who took it down the field and passed to Gray who netted the shorthanded goal to get Harford back within striking range and only 40 seconds left.
  • The Fighting Owls lost the ensuing draw control and time ran out on Harford's season.
  • Despite the loss, goalkeeper Erica Wright deserves a ton of credit for a 15 save performance as she was particularly aggressive in the game to cut off shooting angles.
