Hagerstown, Md. – Dahnye Redd secured her 27th double-double of the season, as the Harford Fighting Owls women's basketball team defeated the Baltimore City Panthers 92–55 en route to claiming their fifth straight Maryland Junior College Conference championship.
Redd (26 points, 14 rebounds) was named the tournament's MVP after the game. She averaged 19 points and 13.7 rebounds in Harford's three contests.
This was the fourth straight year that these teams met for the postseason conference title. Harford was victorious in each of their previous three meetings by an average of 10 points.
The win further establishes Harford head coach Mike Seney's as one of the greatest coaches in NJCAA history. Since Seney took over midway through the 2014-15 season, the Fighting Owls have won 81 straight games against conference opponents.
Harford improves 29-1 with the win, while Baltimore City falls to 18-10.
How it Happened
A wake up call was issued early on by the Panthers, as the Fighting Owls found themselves behind Baltimore City 19-17 at the end of the first quarter. Redd led Harford with six points in the opening quarter. Their lead was quickly washed away by a 15-6 Harford run to start the second, but Baltimore City scored eight of the quarter's final 12 points to draw back within 11 at the half.
A 6-0 scoring burst from the Fighting Owls forced an early third quarter timeout from Baltimore City. The Panthers continued to struggle on offense out of the break, missing their first 10 shots while witnessing Harford drive their lead up 26 by the end of the third.
Harford left no doubt in the result, outscoring Baltimore City 22-13 in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
