BEL AIR, Md. - In a game that took two and a half hours to complete, No. 2 Harford managed to take down No. 3 Hagerstown 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out, Thursday evening in a Region 20 Division I Semifinal contest.
The Fighting Owls and Hawks traded chances throughout the 90 minutes and a pair of two 10-minute overtime periods. Harford outshot or matched Hagerstown in every phase of the game, yet Hawks goalkeeper Delanie Dudley managed to parry away all comers, including a strong free kick by
Sarah Barnes which Dudley pushed above the bar in overtime.
Lauren Westbrook stepped up for Harford as the first participant in the shootout, calming punching home a shot in the bottom right corner of the net. Hagerstown's first attempt would sail high, but Harford's second kick did as well. Hagerstown then tied the shootout 1-1 on its next kick.
This brought up
Lexy Balsamo, who fired her chance into the bottom right of the net as well for a 2-1 lead. Another miss by Hagerstown brought up
Madison Trevillian, who followed suit with her teammates by tapping home her PK to the right corner for a 3-1 lead. This left the Hawks needing to make both of their chances, but their fourth PK sailed off the crossbar to give the women in blue the victory.
Harford is 6-8-2 after today's regulation draw, but move on to the Region 20 finals with the shoot-out victory.
