BEL AIR, Md. - Zach Smith's inside-the-park home run was the deciding factor on Tuesday, as Harford edged out the Rowan College of South Jersey (RCSJ) Gloucester Roadrunners in its season finale, 5-4.
Blake Mayberry's solo home run gave the first lead of the evening to the Fighting Owls. The advantage was short lived, as the Roadrunners pinned three on Harford in the second with a long ball of their own in the second.
An
Ajay Sczepkowski RBI-double to left cut the deficit in half in the next frame, but a sacrifice fly in the fifth lifted RCSJ's lead back up to two. Sczepkowski got involved in another scoring play in the fifth, as a wild pitch and an error after the redshirt sophomore's strikeout tied the game at 4-4.
After both teams refused to blink the sixth, it was Harford who found one last run in the seventh via
Zach Smith's inside-the-park home run. The redshirt sophomore sprinted around the bases on a shot to right field to give the Fighting Owls a 5-4 lead.
From there
Austin Rohlfing (1-1) pitched his second straight scoreless inning, then catcher
Matt Rivera (S, 1) made a surprise first appearance in the ninth to pick up the save from the mound.
Harford finishes its regular season 25-9-1.
