Harford Holds On to Defeat Mustangs

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Fighting Owls defeated the Monroe College Mustangs 6-5 on Tuesday, securing a regular season sweep of its East District foe.

Marcos Del Valle (3-0) starred on the mound for Harford, ripping through Monroe's lineup to the tune of seven strikeouts over six innings of work. The towering right-hander faced the minimum four times and ended his outing with three straight punch outs in the bottom of the sixth.

Quinn Madden's solo home run in the second put the Fighting Owls on the board first. However, the Mustangs managed to plate one on a bases loaded walk to tie the game in the third. Two scoreless innings from both teams preceded a chaotic finish.

Harford's five-run sixth ended up being the deciding factor. With the score tied at 1-1, Andrew Sicinski worked a bases loaded walk to put the Fighting Owls in front. A ground ball to the shortstop by Madden put Sicinski out on the next play but was deep enough to score Blake Mayberry from third. Madden gave way to Lenny Montesano, who roped a double into left to score plate two. A pair of walks followed by a Braedon Karpathios sacrifice fly that scored Nick Gaitan left Monroe trailing by five after the top of the sixth.

The Mustangs plotted a comeback in the seventh, scoring four runs on three hits before Alex Roselli sat down Monroe's cleanup hitter to retire the side. Joe Clancy (S, 2) stepped in and shut down Monroe's offense in the eighth and was sent back out in the ninth to finish the job. The Mustangs managed to put two on with one away, but Clancy forced the fourth batter of the inning to roll into a double play to end the contest at 6-5 in favor of Harford.

The Fighting Owls stand at 39-6 after the victory.
