BEL AIR, Md. - Down 7-0 in the top of the second to No. 2 Potomac State, No. 1 Harford came all the way back to win 10-9 via walk-off walk in extra innings Monday afternoon.
The Catamounts shelled Harford in the first two innings, scoring seven runs off five hits. In need of stability on the mound, Fighting Owls Head Coach
Josh Houser turned to
Bobby Spencer with two outs in the second. Spencer (5-1) proved to be just what Harford needed, striking out eight batters while allowing just four hits and two unearned runs over 8 1/3 innings. He faced the minimum six times and four batters in his final frame of work.
The Fighting Owls plated just one run in the first four innings on a sacrifice fly by
Andrew Sicinski. However, Harford went on to outscore Potomac State 10-2 over the final five frames.
Jeremiah Guzman's RBI single to left started off a big four-run fifth for the parliament.
Braedon Karpathios plated two more on a triple down the right field line and
Blake Mayberry's ground out scored him before the side was retired.
After a scoreless sixth,
Joe Quelch launched a solo shot in the seventh to pull Harford within three. Another scoreless frame in the eighth meant the Fighting Owls needed three to stay alive. Quelch kicked off the inning with a double, then a ground out advanced him to third. Guzman's walk gave way to Karpathios, who one-upped himself by homering to right center to tie the game. A two-out rally was snuffed out by the Catamounts to put the game into extras.Â
Potomac State would put one runner on in the 10th, but a pair of fly outs induced by Spencer closed the door.
Quinn Madden started off the bottom of the frame by forcing a walk and was quickly joined by
Joe Suarez (single) and
Joe Quelch (intentional walk). Four pitches later and Potomac State walked
Trey Cruz to complete Harford's comeback.
The Fighting Owls move to 44-6 on the season.
