BEL AIR, MD - The Harford Fighting Owls celebrated the careers of four sophomores as they hosted the College of Southern Maryland Hawks. Sophomores:
Kaliyah Harris,
Skye Best,
Molly Mullaney, and
Lynnea Pugh- were honored in front of their families and friends prior to tipoff. Each student athlete was presented a framed jersey to commemorate their playing careers at Harford Community College.
The Fighting Owls were looking to extend their win streak and build momentum towards a postseason push in the NJCAA D1 Region 20 tournament next weekend. Harford fell behind early, 22-10, in the 1st quarter as the team struggled to find offensive opportunities. In the 2nd quarter Harford was able to flip the script and outscored Southern Maryland, 21-10 and head into the locker room down by one. The 2nd quarter come back was led by the shooting efforts of
Miranda Turner and
Molly Mullaney.
In the 3rd quarter, Southern Maryland's Angeleen Mulero caught fire and scored 15 of the Hawks 19 points. The Fighting Owl defense struggled to contain the hot shooting guard but
Lynnea Pugh and
Miranda Turner paced the Harford offense to keep the contest close. Harford out rebounded the Hawks, 20-12, and took a 46-45 lead late in the quarter. However, the Hawks ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to retake the lead.
Down only by 5 heading into the 4th quarter, the Fighting Owls looked to turn the script again like they did in the 2nd quarter. Harford turned to its New York connection,
Skye Best and
Marie Bangoura, to fuel the offensive come back. Best and Bangoura scored 6 points each in the 4th quarter and the Hawks' lead was cut to three, midway in the final quarter. Southern Maryland was able to hold off the Harford come back by hitting late free throws. The Fighting Owls received contributions from the entire team. They were led by Turner's double-double (23pts, 14reb), Bangoura's 13pts and 9rebs, Pugh's 10pts, and
Rakayla Ramcharran's 11 rebounds.
Next up, the Fighting Owls take on NJCAA D1 rivals, the Monroe College Mustangs on Monday, Feb. 26.
