Fighting Owls Drop Home Opener

BEL AIR, MD -  The Harford Fighting Owls hosted the defending NJCAA Women's Lacrosse National Champions, Anne Arundel Community College for their home opener Wednesday night. As part of the festivities, the game was designated as a Headstrong game to benefit families impacted by cancer. More information about the Headstrong Foundation can be found at www.headstrong.org.
The Riverhawks dominated the 1st half of play by pressuring the Fighting Owls' players and cutting off passing lanes. The pressure caused nine, 1st half turnovers and generated 9 goals. Backup goalie, Annika Thompson, kept the scoring down with several spectacular saves. Anne Arundel jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Addy Dean broke through with Harford's first goal. Late in the 1st quarter, Lilly Lutz set up Heather Reider's goal to cut into the Riverhawk's lead. In the 2nd quarter, Anne Arundel continued to pressure Harford and add 4 more goals. The Riverhawks took at 9-2 lead into the half.
Coming out of the half, Anne Arundel continue to pepper the goal with shots. Thanks to the stellar play of Thompson, the Riverhawks manged only 6 goals in the 2nd half. Thompson faced 34 shots, 25 on goal, and made 10 saves. She was stepping up after starting goal keeper fell to an injury in the season opener at Monroe Community College. Another player that stood out in the contest was three sport athlete, Saylor Bare. She added two goals late in the 4th quarter. This year, Bare participated in women's soccer and women's basketball.
