WYE MILLS, MD -- The Harford Fighting Owls asserted their dominance early and never relented in a commanding 10-0 road win over Chesapeake College Skipjacks on Wednesday afternoon. Behind stellar pitching, a dynamic offensive performance and airtight defense, the Fighting Owls picked up their third shoutout victory of the season.
In the top of the first inning, Keldrin Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) opened the scoring with a line-drive double to left field that brought home the first run of the game. The momentum carried into the second inning, when James Asmus (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) launched his second home run of the season to right field, giving the Fighting Owls a 2-0 advantage and setting the tone for what would become a one-sided affair.
Right-hander Lion Gardiner (Walt Whitman) was outstanding on the mound for Harford. The sophomore hurler kept the Skipjacks off balance throughout his outing, allowing just three hits and zero runs over four and two thirds innings of work. He struck out five and walked three before turning the game over to the bullpen.
Relievers Dominic Williams (Coatesville, Pa.) and Gavin Glass (Lancaster, Pa.) picked up right where Gardiner left off, combining for 2.1 innings of shutout baseball to secure the mercy-rule victory.
Offensively, Harford was relentless, tallying 12 hits and drawing seven walks in just seven innings. Hitting nineth in the lineup, Danny Witters (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) turned in a standout performance at the plate, going 3-for-5 and providing a consistent spark from the bottom of the lineup.
Jeremy Reyes (Queens, N.Y.) and Ryan Albin (Southhampton, Pa.) both had multi-hit performances. Reyes went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Albin was 2-of-5 to help the Fighting Owls maintain pressure on the Skipjacks' pitching staff throughout the game.
Harford was equally aggressive and effective on the base paths, swiping four bases to further disrupt the Skipjacks' rhythm. Their discipline at the plate and opportunistic baserunning was a lethal combination that allowed them to continuously add to their lead.
Defensively, Harford played flawless baseball, committing no errors.Â
The win marks an important statement for the Fighting Owls, who are looking to build momentum down the stretch of the season. With strong contributions up and down the lineup, a lockdown bullpen, and smart, error-free defense, Harford showcased the kind of all-around performance that will make them a tough opponent, as the postseason beacons on the horizon.
