ROCKVILLE, Md. - Harford Community College women's basketball won its fourth straight game last night, defeating Montgomery College 82-43 on the road.
Caryne Nelson (Our Lady of Mount Carmel) led the way with a game-high 23 points (10-13 shooting) and finished one rebound shy of her twelfth double-double of the season.
The Fighting Owls (19-6, 16-2 Maryland Juco Athletic Conference) are averaging 90 points per game during their most recent streak, outscoring opponents 359-183 during this stretch.
Harford raced out to an early lead and never looked back, using balanced scoring and pressure defense to build a 16-12 advantage after one quarter. The Fighting Owls extended the lead to 32-22 by halftime and dominated the second half before cruising to a 39-point victory inside the Montgomery gym.
Nelson's efficiency set the tone offensively, and her presence on the boards helped Harford control the pace and possession throughout the contest.
Sanaiya Edmond (Silver Spring, Md.) also made a significant impact, finishing with 14 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Edmond's all-around contribution energized the Fighting Owls, particularly in transition and in setting up scoring opportunities for her teammates.
Ayca Kazak (Samsun, Turkey) contributed 14 points and eight rebounds, providing another interior scoring threat for Harford. Nehir Safkan (Mersin, Turkey) added 13 points and nine rebounds, helping the Fighrting Owls maintain a strong presence in the paint. Amya Goodsell (Our Lady of Mount Carmel) chipped in 12 points as part of Harford's deep rotation.
Harford's offense was efficient from the outset, shooting 41.0% from the field. The Fighting Owls also assisted on 17 baskets and recorded 18 fast-break points.
The Raptors (10-13, 4-5) struggled to find offensive consistency. Montgomery shot 25.4% from the field and made only three of 19 attempts from beyond the arc. Sanai Massenburg led the Raptors with 16 points, and Imani Dennis added 11 points, but Montgomery was unable to cut into Harford's lead in the second half.
First quarter: Harford struck first and set a physical tone, attacking the paint and running in transition. A string of early baskets by Nelson and Edmond helped the Fighting Owls secure a 16-12 lead after one. Harford's defense forced multiple turnovers and limited Montgomery's second-chance opportunities.
Second quarter: The Fighting Owls boosted their efficiency in the second, shooting 50% from the field and stretching the lead to 32-22 at the break. Kazak's presence on the boards and timely scoring from Goodsell kept the Raptors on their heels. Harford's length disrupted Montgomery's offensive rhythm and led to easy transition points.
Third quarter: Harford's depth became a factor after halftime as reserves maintained offensive pressure. The Fighting Owls outscored the Raptors 20-6 in the third quarter, alternating scoring threats and forcing Montgomery into rushed shots. Nelson continued to assert herself inside, while Edmond facilitated from the perimeter. Harford's balanced attack opened up a 52-28 advantage headed to the fourth.
Fourth quarter: Substitutions kept Harford's starters fresh early, but the margin was too great for Montgomery to overcome. The Fighting Owls poured in 30 points in the final quarter, highlighted by a late surge from Nelson and continued aggression from Kazak and Safkan. Harford's defense limited Montgomery to 15 fourth-quarter points and sealed the decisive win.
Harford also dominated the glass, outrebounding the Raptors and converting extra possessions into points off turnovers. The Fighting Owls' disciplined approach on both ends of the floor was evident throughout, exemplifying a complete performance on the road.
With the victory, Harford continues its push in Region 20 play and remains one of the top teams in the conference standings. The Fighting Owls will return home to the APG Federal Credit Union Arena on Monday, February 16, for a 6 p.m. tipoff as they host WVU Potomac State College.
