BEL AIR, Md. — The Harford Community College women's soccer team remained unbeaten last Saturday with a 4-2 victory over Sussex County Community College at Harford Stadium, getting two goals from Hailey Cain and a goal and an assist from Lila Vincenti.
The Fighting Owls controlled much of the opening half, outshooting the Skylanders 12-5 and putting seven shots on goal. Harford's pressure finally produced a breakthrough late in the period, as Cain scored twice in a span of 50 seconds to give the Fighting Owls a 2-0 advantage.
Cain opened the scoring at 36:58, recording the first goal of the game. She struck again at 37:48 to double Harford's lead. The Fighting Owls carried the two-goal advantage into halftime after holding Sussex County scoreless through the opening 45 minutes.
"On the second goal, I came in hot on the Sussex goalkeeper as she was trying to clear ball," Cain said. "And I got enough of my foot on the ball to deflect it into the back of the net."
Harford added to its lead early in the second half. At 49:14, Vincenti scored off an assist from Emma Paff, putting the Fighting Owls ahead 3-0. Vincenti finished the game with three shots, including one on goal.
Sussex County got on the board in the 57th minute when Lottie Cheverton scored off an assist from Kendra Deckert. Cheverton, who entered the game as a substitute, would account for both of the Skylanders' goals.
Harford restored its three-goal cushion in the 74th minute. Annabelle Lathroum found the net at 73:11, with Victoria Mendez providing the assist. Lathroum finished with five shots, four of them on goal.
Cheverton scored again at 80:21 to bring Sussex County within two, but the Fighting Owls kept the Skylanders off the scoreboard for the remainder of the match to secure the victory.
The Fighting Owls finished with a 26-13 advantage in total shots and a 14-10 edge in shots on goal. Sussex County held an 11-5 advantage in corner kicks, while Harford committed seven fouls to the Skylanders' 13.
Cain led Harford with six shots and three shots on goal while scoring twice. Lathroum added one goal, while Vincenti contributed a goal and an assist. Mendez and Paff each recorded an assist.
Olivia Wollschlager started in goal and played the first half, making two saves. Alyssa Dunnigan played the second half and made five saves.
Fighting Owls withstand a late Montgomery push to remain undefeated
ROCKVILLE, Md. — Vincenti scored the game's only goal and Olivia Wollschlager recorded a shutout as the Harford Community College women's soccer team defeated Montgomery College, 1-0, Tuesday night on the road.
The Fighting Owls controlled the offensive opportunities for much of the match, finishing with a 14-5 advantage in shots and putting seven attempts on goal compared with two for Montgomery. Harford also held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Harford created several chances during the opening half before finally breaking through in the 37th minute. Vincenti scored at 36:50, with Sydney McLaughlin credited with the assist, giving the Fighting Owls a 1-0 lead.
McLaughlin had helped generate pressure throughout the first half, recording two shots. One of those attempts was blocked in the 32nd minute, while another struck the crossbar just over a minute later. Vincenti's goal followed shortly afterward to give Harford the lead.
Montgomery produced its best opportunity of the opening half less than a minute after Vincenti's goal. Brianna Herrera-Talavera put a shot on goal at 37:34, but Wollschlager made the save to preserve Harford's advantage.
The Fighting Owls continued to generate chances after halftime. Vincenti recorded two shots on goal during the second half, both of which were saved by Montgomery goalkeeper Madelis Solorzano.
Montgomery increased its offensive pressure late in the match but was unable to find the equalizer. Cesia Centeno put a shot on goal at 84:43, but Wollschlager made the save. The Montgomery defense also prevented Harford from adding to its lead, with Solorzano making three saves in the second half.
Wollschlager finished with two saves over 90 minutes to record the shutout. Solorzano and Laura Tapia each played 45 minutes in goal for Montgomery, combining for six saves.
Vincenti led Harford with four shots and three shots on goal while scoring the lone goal. McLaughlin finished with two shots and the assist.
The victory improved the Fighting Owls to 3-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play.
