Fighting Owl Athletic Hall of Fame
I. Name
The Harford Community College Hall of Fame shall be named the Fighting Owl Athletic Hall of Fame (the “Hall of Fame”) in honor of the current athletic mascot.
II. Purpose
The purpose of the Hall of Fame shall be to honor those individuals and teams who have made outstanding contributions to the intercollegiate athletic program at Harford Community College (the “College”) or who have earned distinction in the world of athletics.
III. Eligibility
A. Individual All graduates of the College shall be eligible for individual membership, provided at least five (5) years have elapsed since graduating. Exceptions to the 5-year guideline are appropriate for those athletes whose performance (e.g. national champions, etc.) is above and beyond the norm attained by most Hall of Fame athletes. In no case shall less than two (2) years have elapsed since graduation.
B. Team Teams representing the College shall be eligible, provided at least five (5) years have elapsed since that team last performed. Exceptions to the 5-year guideline are appropriate for those teams whose performance (e.g. national champions, etc.) is above and beyond the norm attained by most Hall of Fame teams. In no case shall less than two (2) years have elapsed since the team last performed.
C. Honorary Non-graduates of the College shall be eligible for honorary membership. Former College coaches shall also be eligible for honorary membership.
IV. Selection Committee
Hall of Fame membership selection shall be conducted annually by the Fighting Owl Athletic Hall of Fame Selection Committee (the “Selection Committee”). The Selection Committee shall include at least four (4) members comprised of a designated person by the HCC Foundation (the “Foundation”), the Athletic Director (the “AD”), the Manager of Athletic Communications (the “MAC”) and shall include at least one (1) individual member of the Hall of Fame from the previous year. The AD and the Foundation shall serve as Co-Chairs of the Selection Committee. The Selection Committee members shall be approved annually by the Co-Chairs of the Selection Committee.
V. Nominations
Nominations for membership in the Hall of Fame shall be accepted by the Selection Committee from any member of the Harford Community College Alumni Association (the “HCCAA”), the Foundation, the Selection Committee, general public, and/or current or former College coaches or student athletes. Nominations shall be based on performance, honors and quality of representation of the College. Nominations may be submitted in writing or electronically and should include details of the nominee’s performance, honors, etc.
VI. Legacy Nominees
A Legacy Nominee Sub-Committee (the “LNSC”) shall review historical records from the College or outside sources to identify eligible persons (individual, team or honorary) not previously selected for membership in the Hall of Fame who might meet the criteria for membership. At least 15 years shall have passed since the potential member graduated, the team last performed for, or the individual served at, the College. The LNSC shall be made up of the AD, the MAC, a member of the Hall of Fame, and a current athletic coach. The AD and the MAC shall serve as Co-Chairs of the LNSC. LNSC members shall be approved annually by the Chair of the Selection Committee. The LNSC shall meet prior to the Selection Committee and make recommendations, if any, to the Selection Committee for the current year’s induction. The Selection Committee shall vote on these recommendations as part of the current year’s selection process.
VII. Selection
There shall be a minimum of two (2) and a maximum of eight (8), new Hall of Fame members per year. A team selection shall be considered as one member. The Selection Committee shall determine the manner of selection and the exact number of new members selected each year.
VIII. Notification
The Foundation and the AD (and/or their designee) shall be responsible for notifying of all newly selected Hall of Fame members. Such notification shall be initially by telephone, followed by a formal letter of invitation from the President and the AD. In order to be inducted, all newly selected members must formally accept their invitations for membership in the Hall of Fame.
IX. Induction
An induction ceremony into the Hall of Fame shall be conducted annually on a suitable occasion. All members inducted shall receive an appropriate symbol of membership for personal use. Permanent recognition shall be placed in the Harford Sports Complex. An announcement of Hall of Fame membership selection shall be included in appropriate College publications and released to the public news media. All previously inducted Hall of Fame individual, team and honorary members shall be invited to attend the induction ceremony.
